The Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education was organized in 1924 as the coordinating agency for the following Jewish educational institutions in the greater Cleveland, Ohio, area: Cleveland Hebrew Schools, Hebrew Academy, United Jewish Religious Schools, Institute of Jewish Studies, Workmen's Circle School, and Yeshivath Adath B'nai Israel. Representatives from these schools and representatives from area temples serve as members of the bureau's board of trustees. The Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education is a constituent agency of the Jewish Community Federation and is affiliated with the American Association for Jewish Education.
The Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education has occupied several sties over the years. Its first headquarters was in the Old Arcade in downtown Cleveland. The Ulmer Building on Public Square became its second location in 1926 until the effects of the Great Depression forced a move to east 105th Street in 1933. In 1943, the Bureau moved into a new center on East Boulevard in the University Circle neighborhood of Cleveland. In 1953, the agency moved to its current location on Taylor Road at Superior Road in Cleveland Heights. In 1993, the agency changed its name to the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland.
The Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education Records, 1918-1968 and undated, consist of correspondence, committee minutes, reports, financial records, scrapbooks, publications of the Bureau and its affiliated schools, and files of the Jewish Community Federation. Original minutes of the Bureau of Jewish Education are maintained by the Bureau.
This collection relates primarily to the administration of the Jewish educational system in Cleveland, Ohio, and its suburbs. the materials reflect upon the development of curriculum, teaching standards and technique of instruction, as well as to the management of property, transportation, and personnel within the system. Other materials in the collection relate largely to the relations between the Bureau and its constituent schools, including the Cleveland Hebrew Schools, the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, United Jewish Religious Schools, the Institute of Jewish Studies, Workmen's Circle School, and Yeshivath Adath B'nai Israel.
The collection has been retained in original order and is arranged in five series.
