Biography of the Bettie Allee Black FamilyBettie Allee Black (1921- ) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a genealogist active since 1964, has specialized in tracing the lineage of the Allee, Carter, Hixson, Jackson, Slaven, and Wolverton familes, all of which are her ancestral families.
Scope and ContentThe Bettie Allee Black Family Papers, 1862-1884, 1908-1919, 1960-1975, consist of Mrs. Black's own genealogical correspondence, genealogy manuscripts and charts, and copies of sources of information she used. There are also a few original family letters and papers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The collection consists primarily of Mrs. Black's genealogy material. However, a few items contain information of interest to social historians. The World War I diary of Russell L. Allee describes his voyage to Europe and his activities while there. The original Carter family letters include two Civil War letters exchanged by Jasper N. Carter, a Union soldier, and his father, John Carter. All of these items provide insights into the lives of the people involved and the circumstances in which they lived.
Statement of ArrangementThe collection is arranged in seven series. Each series is arranged by document type and then alphabetically by the name of the person or a family subject heading. The only exception is correspondence, which is arranged alphabetically by correspondent within each series and then chronologically. Items containing references to more than one family remain with the family group to which Mrs. Black assigned them.
