The Cleveland Society (f. 1923) was composed of American businessmen and professionals of Polish descent in the Cleveland, Ohio area who promoted citizenship and fostered the language, traditions, and culture of Poland. The group was a spinoff organization of the Polish National Alliance. In addition to sponsoring an annual debutante ball, the membership (which was by invitation only) raised money for Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio.
The Cleveland Society Records, 1931-1978 and undated, consist of a constitution, membership roster, minutes, correspondence, programs, newsletters, and newspaper clippings.
This collection will be useful for understanding an "elite" ethnic social club that tried to assimilate some of the habits of upper class American society while simultaneously retaining their cultural identity. Those interested in the Polish immigrant community of Cleveland, Ohio, and ethnic social and business clubs during the twentieth century will find this collection useful.
The collection is arranged by document type and then chronologically.
