Mary Doan Taylor compiled a history of her own families, the Taylors, Wilders, Doans, and Adams, during the first half of the twentieth century. Her Taylor ancestry traces back to John Taylor of Windsor, Connecticut, who may have been lost at sea in 1645. Four generations later, in 1834, Henry Taylor (b. 1809) married Polly Wilder, a descendant of Nicholas Wilder who was a military captain in the army of the Earl of Richmond and was given a landed estate by King Henry VII in 1497. The Adams family traces its ancestry to John Adams (1759-17989) of Washington County, Pennsylvania, and to his son Darius (1810-1896) who married Mary Ann Doan (1811-1885) in 1833. Mary Ann was the daughter of Timothy Doan who settled in what is now East Cleveland at the turn of the eighteenth century, near his brother Nathaniel for whom Doan's Corners and Doan's Brook were named. It was Nathaniel Doan who helped to found the First Presbyterian Church in the area and the Doan and Taylor families who continued active participation in this institution.
The Mary Doan Taylor Family History, 1912-1957, consist of a two volume manuscript history of the Taylor, Wilder, Doan, and Adams families which includes information not only on genealogy, but also on the early settlement of the Cleveland, Ohio, area and on the history of First Presbyterian Church, also called "Old First."
The collection primarily pertains to the genealogy of the Mary Doan Taylor Family and their early settlement in what became the Cleveland, Ohio, area.
