Myrtle L. and her friend, Carrie E. traveled on a sightseeing trip by steamer from Cleveland, Ohio, to Buffalo, New York, and then by train across the state to New York City. During their train ride, they stayed in towns and cities along the way, including Albany, Poughkeepsie, and Larrytown. After visiting New York City, the "Myrtle" and "Carrie" traveled on to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Myrtle kept a journal that describes in detail the sights and memorable events of the journey, the young men they met, shopping excursions, friends and fellow Clevelanders they saw, and includes documentation of their expenses and a visit to the Rockefeller Estate in New York.
The "Myrtle L." Travel Journal, 1898, consists to one volume and loose items found within the journal kept by Myrtle L., a young woman whose surname is not recorded.
This journal may be of interest to researchers studying tourism, travel and lifestyles at the turn of the twentieth century. Expenses are well-documented, as well as many other details in the trip that spanned from Cleveland, to Buffalo, to New York City, to Philadelphia, including sights, historic houses, menus, and shop purchases. Also included is an exact description of the interior of the Rockefeller mansion and an account of the journalist's visit there. The journal will also be useful to scholars of women's studies, as the diarist writes of her personal interests and of her impressions of the people and places she encountered.
