The Greater Cleveland Board of Rabbis (f. 1964) is an organization of Conservative and Reform rabbis in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area. (The Orthodox Rabbinical Council of Cleveland is the separate umbrella organization for Orthodox rabbis.) The Greater Cleveland Board of Rabbis provides an organizational structure and united voice in the community for local Conservative and Reform rabbis. It also serves as a forum for the discussion of problems relating to Jewish life and to problems of a general societal nature. In addition, it promotes the education of its members.
The Greater Cleveland Board of Rabbis Records, 1964-1991, consists primarily of correspondence and minutes. Also included in the records are the organization's articles of incorporation and its constitution.
This collection is of value to researchers studying Conservative and Reform rabbinic leadership in America in the second half of the twentieth century. Specifically, this collection documents the response of Conservative and Reform rabbis in the Greater Cleveland, Ohio, area to issues involving the local Jewish community as well as local secular institutions. Of particular interest are the group's discussions concerning the separation of church and state in the public schools.
