The Bureau of Jewish Education (f. 1924) is the coordinating agency for the following Jewish educational institutions in the greater Cleveland area: Agnon School, Akiva High School, Beth Am School, Beth-Aynu School, Beth Israel School, Brith Emeth School, Camp Galil, Camp Stone, Cleveland Hebrew Schools, the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, Fairmount Temple School, Green Road Synagogue School, Hebrew Academy, Heights Jewish Center School, Hillel High School, Solomon Schechter Day School, Taylor Road Synagogue School, Temple Emanuel School, Temple Ner Tamid School, the Temple on the Heights School, the Temple on the Heights-Park Synagogue Religious School, The Temple School, United Jewish Religious Schools, Workmen's Circle Schools, Yesivath Adath B'nai Israel Schools. The researcher should consult MS 3832 Bureau of Jewish Education Records for a brief history of this organization.
The Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education Records, Series II, 1925-1992 (1960-1970s), consist primarily of minutes, reports, budgets, and correspondence.
The collection is of value to researchers studying parochial education in general and Jewish religious education in particular. Because of the time period of the bulk (1960-1970) of this collection, the researcher can study the effects of rapid secularization and assimilation within the Jewish community and the efforts by community institutions responding to these forces. Also of special note is the development and growth of the Cleveland College of Jewish Studies and the programs designed to aid Soviet Jewish immigrants' adjustment to the United States. Notable documentation on the Cleveland Hebrew Schools, Cleveland College of Jewish Studies, Hebrew Academy, and The Jewish Community Federation of Greater Cleveland is included.
The collection is arranged in four series.
All photographs have been removed to the photograph and print collections. Almost all of the photographs have detailed identification of the persons imaged.
The researcher should also consult MS 3832 Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education Records; and PG 493 Cleveland Bureau of Jewish Education Photographs.
