Myron S. Stanford (1907-1979) was a lawyer active in Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish communal organizations and the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party. Born in Poland, he immigrated to the United States in 1920, living first in Canton and later in Cleveland, Ohio. When he immigrated to America his name was Meier Spokojny, by 1921 his name was Meyer Spocony, and by 1929 his name had been changed to Myron Spocony Stanford.
Stanford received his bachelor's and law degrees from Western Reserve University. Between 1941 and 1945, he served as an Assistant Police Prosecutor for the City of Cleveland. He ran unsuccessfully for several positions: Cleveland Ward 25 Councilman (1933, 1935, and 1941); Ohio House of Representatives (1936); and Shaker Heights Municipal Court Judge (1957). At various times he served as president of the United Jewish Religious Schools, the Fairmount Temple Men's Club, B'nai B'rith Mid Day Lodge, B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, and Masada Chapter, Zionist Organization of America. He also chaired the Performing Arts Committee of the Jewish Community Center (Mayfield Road) and acted in their Yiddish productions.
The Myron S. Stanford Papers, 1921-1991, consist of certificates, correspondence, directories, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notes and writings reflecting Stanford's interest in the law and the Jewish community.
The collection is of value to researchers studying individuals who were active in both the secular and Jewish community in general, and specifically in Cleveland, Ohio. Of particular interest are Stanford's legal briefs before the supreme courts of Ohio and the United States and his writings on the legal system of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
