Robert E. Schade (b. 1924) was born and reared in Cleveland, Ohio. A descendant of Irish immigrants, he participated in the Irish community, including marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade during his high school years at Cathedral Latin School. His career primarily consisted of working as vice president of Willard F. Schade and Associates for thirty-five years. Schade is a descendant of the Dempsey family that originated in Ireland. Upon immigrating to the United States and coming to Cleveland, Ohio, family members found employment in occupations that welcomed the Irish, while maintaining their Irish traditions. Robert's great-grandfather, James Dempsey, was one of the founding members of St. Malachi's Church in Cleveland, Ohio. It has been said that James preached temperance in the Irish neighborhoods in Cleveland. Robert's grandfather, William Dempsey, sailed on the Great Lakes. Mention of this appears in the book chapter that makes up part of this collection. William also worked for the Cleveland Fire Department, retiring at seventy-six years of age. William was married to Lucy Walker, to whom he wrote a poem upon their engagement on March 7, 1880. Another descendant of this family was head of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the generations, this family maintained their genealogical records, confirming relationships with the Ranney, Monaghan, Walker, and DeBinder families.
The Robert E. Schade Family Papers, 1820-1994, consist of a book chapter; cemetery records; certificates of birth, baptism, marriage and death; correspondence; a descendancy chart; family histories; a family crest; family tree; genealogical information; last will and testament; memoirs; newspaper clippings; obituaries; passenger arrival records; photographs; and a poem.
