Albert Yeomans (1826-1890) was born in Kinsman, Trumbull County, Ohio, and was the son of Joshua and Harriet Cole Yeomans. He attended the Grand River Institute at Austinburg, Ohio, and in 1845 moved to Warren, Ohio, to study law with General Crowell. Yeomans served as the captain of Company B of the 125th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War when the company was mustered in 1862. He was shot in the thigh during the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863, and while he continued to fight throughout the battle, the ball remained in his thigh for a year, causing a permanent limp. He returned to Trumbull County and was elected probate judge in 1864, a post he filled until 1879. Yeomans worked as a private attorney until his death in 1890. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Warren, Ohio, with his wife Emilia Adams Yeomans (1842-1918).
The Albert Yeomans Papers, 1862-1893 and undated, consist of appointment papers, correspondence, election certificates, a journal entry, a list, a muster role, obituaries, pension certificates, reports, speeches, and statements.
This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of the American Civil War, particularly the activities of Company B of the 125th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry (OVI) and Captain Albert Yeomans. The collection particularly documents the supply and ordnance needs of Company B from 1863-1864, including clothing, horses, food, and weapons. The wound received by Yeomans at the Battle of Chickamauga, and the effect it had on his brief military career, is documented in detail. The collection also documents the legal career of Yeomans after the Civil War, particularly his elections to the Trumbull County probate court. Finally, the collection documents the political beliefs of Yeomans and his participation in Republican Party politics in Ohio after the Civil War.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by document type and then chronologically.
