As an African American woman coming of age in the early twentieth century, she and her family endured discrimination in many situations. She graduated from high school in Topeka, Kansas, went on to college at the University of Chicago, and eventually earned her Ph.D. from New York University. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1940s and became renown for her musical talents and research, diplomatic career, her contributions to the civil rights movement locally, and her career as an administrator and educator/lecturer. Cole (1883-1970) was a Cleveland, Ohio, photographer who produced over 50,000 photographs of people and places in the African American community of Cleveland, Ohio. Cole opened his first studio in 1922 at 9909 Cedar Avenue, supplementing his income with commercial work and commission work for eight white-owned studios, and earned prizes and commendations at state and local exhibitions. His photographs were frequently published in The Call and Post.
