The area comprised all land south of Lake Erie to 41' latitude and within 120 miles of Pennsylvania's western border. The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was authorized by Connecticut to purchase and resell most of the Western Reserve, and received title to all Reserve land except for the 500,000-acre Firelands on the extreme west which was reserved for Connecticut victims whose lands were burned by the British in the Revolution. Gen. Moses Cleaveland, a company director and its general agent, led the first company survey party to the Reserve in 1796 and founded the settlement of Cleveland at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. Root (b. 1923) of Plymouth, Ohio, was a ceramics engineer, salesman, pilot and aerial photographer. He learned to fly an airplane at the Mansfield Airport in 1939, and subsequently owned a series of small aircraft. From 1966 until his retirement in 1994, Root ran his own business, Tom Root Air Photos, Inc. His principal clients included the American Shipbuilding Company, Denison and Oberlin colleges, General Electric, Timken, Ford, General Motors, and many field tilling contractors. Root's company specialized in single photograph verticals for field tilling operations, zoning, and single views of entire towns. Many of his aerial photographs documented newsworthy events; some were distributed to the national media. She was founder of the Floral Syndicate, a publicity service which promoted conventions and other activities of interest to the floral industry and was garden editor of the Plain Dealer. Her series in the Sunday Plain Dealer, focusing on historic Cleveland led to her book, "Famous old Euclid Avenue", featuring anecdotes, history and biographies relating to the homes and personalities of "Millionaires' Row." The collection consists of correspondence, reminiscences, writings, and memorabilia relating to Wilson's life and family, the floral industry, her organizational affiliations, and her book. There are also some genealogical materials relating to the Grant family. After college, Garfinkel worked in his family's seven-store chain Garfinkel Shoes. He was appointed office manager of the company in the early 1960s, but was encouraged by his father to pursue his dream of teaching. He obtained a position at Kent State University in 1963 and taught there until his retirement in 1996. Garfinkel had a special interest in oral history. One of Garfinkel's oral history projects was on the garment industry in Cleveland, Ohio. He interviewed several people who worked in or helped shape the garment industry. He then used those interviews to produce a slide show entitled "Rags: 100 Years of the Apparel Industry in Northeast Ohio," and a television documentary entitled "Rags." They had five children: Joseph Kirkpatrick (1848-1894), John Clark, Mary (Mame), Allen, and Robert. The donors of the collection are descendants of Joseph Kirkpatrick Bole and Melinda Eliza Bole (Patterson, 1850-1918). Joseph and Melinda had seven children. The majority of the material is related to their second son, Joseph "Joe" Kirkpatrick Bole (1876-1952), and his wife's, Winifred Ely Bole (Ely, 1881-1976), line of descendants. Joe Bole attended Cornell University and was an avid golfer and fisherman. Campbell served as president of the City Club of Cleveland, and was instrumental in opening its doors to women. He directed the Cleveland Heritage Program for Cleveland Public Library. He ran for mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1977. He founded the Irish American Archives Society and was deeply involved in the Irish American community of Cleveland, as well as numerous other groups in the Cleveland, Ohio area.
