Born in New York, he married Mary Bennet in Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1821. In 1826, he purchased land in Rockport Township from George Peak Jr. in what is now Rocky River, Ohio. In addition to farming, beginning in 1829 Giddings ran a wool carding business in Rockport Township. The farmers of Rockport Township nominated him as a candidate for the office of Sheriff of Cuyahoga County in 1838. The census of 1850 lists him as owning a substantial farm in Rockport Township. While his son Chauncy Giddings is listed as a resident of Rockport Township in the 1860 census, there is no entry for Calvin. By the 1870 census, Calvin Giddings was living in Erie County, Ohio. He died April 4, 1875, and is buried, along with his wife, Mary and several children, in the Fairview Park (Rockport) Cemetery, Fairview Park, Ohio.
