It was organized in 1911 by Jane Edna Hunter and originally called the Working Girls Home Association. Its members worked for legislation, standards and licensing to improve all local nurseries. The collection consists of annual reports, minutes of the Board of Trustees and special committees, financial records, correspondence, reports on individual nurseries, publications, scrapbooks and newspaper clippings. By 1914 it began cultural and recreational programs, and by the Great Depression it grew into a full service community center, adding such services as day care nurseries, Americanization classes, and aid to Japanese Americans relocated to Cleveland during World War II.
