The organization was created in response to increasing violence and sexual discrimination against gays in Cleveland and throughout the nation. Stonewall Cleveland advanced its agendas through advertisements in several gay publications, as well as by engaging religious organizations. More recently, the group has become a Democratic Party club and is a national affiliate of the National Stonewall Democrats under the name Cleveland Stonewall Democrats.
