Dunbar, a farm laborer from Newburgh, Ohio, enlisted in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, at Camp Wade in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1861. Trained at Camp Dennison, Ohio, his company left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in January 1862, Dunbar having been appointed sergeant and later quartermaster sergeant. While the regiment was defending the Kansas and Missouri borders during the Civil War, Dunbar became ill and was discharged on October 2, 1862, returning after a lengthy journey home via wagon and train to Newburgh. His whereabouts were reported as unknown at the end of the war. He participated in the battles of Tullahoma, Chattanooga, and Chickamauga, and, later, served with Sherman in Georgia.
