Palmer had an intense interest in the American Civil War and acquired an extensive collection of manuscript material related to the war, the memories of that conflict, and slavery. This collection is one of several Palmer collections from the Civil War era owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society. He was shot on 6 September, 1901 and died eight days later. During the American Civil War he was Commissary Sergeant with the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother-in-law, Andrew J. Duncan also served during the Civil War. The collection consists of photographs, general correspondence, family papers, financial papers, Civil War records of McKinley and A. J.
