The collection consists primarily of general and personal letters to Mary Ballard, later Mrs. William Ross, of Pittsfield, Illinois, from her father, Rev. He was wounded during battle at Sabrine Crossroads, near New Orleans in April 1864, and died on May 13, 1864, at the age of 32, at New Orleans, Louisiana. He is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Acton, Massachusetts. Stockwell spent some time on patrol boats in and around Louisiana and Texas.
