Garfield who was a teacher and librarian at Columbia University. After her retirement, she worked on a history of Hiram, Ohio, at the Cleveland Public Library. Her father, Joseph Rudolph, was a soldier in Company A, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War.
