His son Wesley served in the 9th New York Cavalry during the American Civil War, while another son, Bradford, served in the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, recipes (in German and English), song lyrics, an account of the early settling of Chandler's Valley, Pennsylvania, letters in German script (1855-1874) from family members to immigrant relatives in the United States, a register of Company F of the 9th New York Cavalry, and miscellaneous documents.
