He led its first surveying and exploring party into the Western Reserve in 1795 and founded the City of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1796. He moved his family there in 1803. He also constructed the road from Youngstown to Grand River and surveyed Burton, Poland and Youngstown. He supported roads, schools and libraries in the area and became a judge and state senator.
