It became Local 5 of the Bricklayers' and Masons' International Union of America in 1881 and Local 5 of the Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers International Union of America in 1910. Although one of the earliest trades to organize nationally (1865), the Bricklayers maintained their independence from any larger organization well into the 20th century, and consistently rejected the idea of one single union in favor of a separate union for each craft. The Bricklayers reflected the early trade union philosophy that merit and skill and the development of the craft were indispensable for progress of the labor movement.
