As an African American woman coming of age in the early twentieth century, she and her family endured discrimination in many situations. She graduated from high school in Topeka, Kansas, went on to college at the University of Chicago, and eventually earned her Ph.D. from New York University. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1940s and became renown for her musical talents and research, diplomatic career, her contributions to the civil rights movement locally, and her career as an administrator and educator/lecturer. It merged with the Retail Clerks International Association in 1979 to form the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. District 427 established the Community Health Foundation in 1964, with the cooperation of the Retail Clerks Local 880. The Foundation merged with Kaiser in 1969. His family claim ancestry to Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland. His father, also named Martin, immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in the late 1800s when he was twelve years old. The younger McFadden was a well-respected police officer and the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department requested his help as a bodyguard for four presidential inaugurations. McFadden was the arresting officer in the case of John W. Terry, Richard D. Chilton, and Carl Katz that led to the United States Supreme Court case of Terry v. Ohio (1968). The result of this case gave police officers the authority to stop and search citizens on the street. | | | Creator: | Johnson, Ella Mae Cheeks | | | Dates: | 1948-2010 | | | Abstract: | Ella Mae Cheeks Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1904. Orphaned at age four, she was raised by the Davis family. She attended Dallas Colored High School and Fisk University before applying to the School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. Johnson graduated in 1928 with a master's degree in social work. As a social worker, Johnson was first employed by Associated Charities of Cleveland, Ohio. Later, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Welfare in conjunction with the federal program Aid to Dependent Children. She retired in 1961. Johnson married Elmer Cheeks in 1929. They had two sons. Cheeks died in 1941, and Johnson married Raymond Johnson in 1957. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, an avid reader and traveler, and a supporter of a variety of charities. At age 105, she attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. Soon after, with the assistance of a freelance writer, she wrote her autobiography. It was published shortly after her death in 2010. Prior to his years at The Temple, Daniel Jeremy Silver was rabbi at Congregation Beth Torah of Chicago Heights, Illinois. He became senior Rabbi of The Temple in 1963, serving until his death. He was active in local Cleveland Jewish and secular affairs, particularly with Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Jewish Community Federation's Public Welfare Committee. He was also active in the Central Conference of American Rabbis, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the Zionist Organization of America. Silver was the author of four books and many popular and scholarly articles, and also edited books and journals.
