 Abstract:  Thompson Products Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of press releases intended to introduce new products or announce new achievements in the field of aviation and space, and includes images of aircraft, aviation, and space related subjects. These images were used by Thompson Products as a photographic reference of industry developments in aviation and space. The development of jet airframe technology between 1950 and 1965 is well represented in the collection, as well as space exploration and reusable space plane designs.

 Abstract:  The Clarke School of Dressmaking and Fashion Design was a Cleveland, Ohio, dressmaking, tailoring and fashion design school founded in 1925 by Amanda Wicker, primarily for young African-American women. Wicker retired and sold the school in 1979, which was still in operation in 1990. The collection consists of individual portraits of founder Amanda Wicker, her friends and associates; Clarke School board members, school graduates, and models; and views of events, activities and instructional classes. Included in the collection are portraits of Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich, Representative Troy Lee James, Cynthia Holloway, Judge Perry B. Jackson, Wyatt Brownlee, and Elizabeth Lambright. Events depicted include The Book of Gold and other fashion shows, award ceremonies of the Amanda Wicker Scholarship and the Cleveland Scholarship Program, board meetings, and social functions.

 Abstract:  Local 427 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union is a Northeast Ohio labor union representing employees involved in the sale or processing of food, especially butchers, packing-house workers and fur industry workers. It was known until 1979 as Meat Cutters District 427 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, when the international merged with the Retail Clerks International Union to become the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. Sam Pollock served as president, 1953-1973, and was succeeded by Frank Cimino, who later became an officer of the international body. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of union officials and members and their families. Also includes views of organizing and strike activities, community activities, and a large group of photographs relating to the Bondi Supermarket strike, 1956-1957, in Cleveland, Ohio.

 Abstract:  Saint Luke's Hospital began operations as Cleveland General Hospital in 1894 on Woodland Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation. The hospital is currently owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System and the University Hospitals Health System. The collection consists of views of the construction of the addition to Saint Luke's Hospital at Shaker Boulevard. and East 116th Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The photographs were taken by R. E. Hawkins of Lakewood, Ohio, for the Hubbell and Benes Company, architects. Included are some panoramic views of the hospital addition construction.

 Abstract:  The Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of 699 black and white photographic prints, 131 color photographic prints, 10 copies of photographs, 10 negatives, 3 post cards and 51 copies of postcards, and 9 cased images depicting members of the Wade, Garretson, Howe, Stone, Love, Greene, Everett, McGaw and Sedgwick families as well as family activities, travels, residences, and other places of importance to the members of these related families for a total of 913 images.

 Abstract:  Ada Watterson Yerkes (1873-1963) was related to three families who settled early in the Western Reserve. The Harper family came from New York in 1798 and founded Harpersfield, Ohio. The Norton family came from New York before 1839 when Ada Yerkes' maternal grandparents were married in Harpersfield. The Watterson family came from England in 1826 and settled in Warrensville, Ohio. Various family members served in the Civil War and were active in a number of business ventures, including the Gardner Gun Company of London, England and the Ogleby-Norton Company of Cleveland. The collection consists of photographs relating to the Harper, Norton, and Watterson families.

 Abstract:  Charles Francis Brush (1849-1929) was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and inventor. His inventions included a dynamo which was the predecessor for the modern generator and the arc light, demonstrated on Cleveland's Public Square in 1879. Brush formed the Brush Electric Co. in 1880, which was subsequently bought by Thomason Houston Electric Co., and then merged with Edison General Electric Co. in 1891, forming the General Electric Co. Brush continued to maintain scientific and business interests throughout his life, and founded the Brush Foundation in 1927. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Charles F. Brush, his friends and associates, and views of his inventions, including the arc lamp and wind powered dynamo. Also included is a view of an arc lamp on Cleveland, Ohio's Public Square, ca. 1896.

 Abstract:  The Supreme Camp of the American Woodmen was founded in Denver, Colorado, as a national African American fraternal and mutual benefit association. The organization had chapters, called Tents, across the country. A subsidiary, the American Woodmen Life Insurance Company, provided mutual benefit life insurance to members of the Supreme Camp. The collection consists of individual portraits of Frank Simon, president of the Cleveland, Ohio tent, and other members of the Cleveland tent; and views of business meetings, conferences, ceremonies, parades, and coronations of Kings and Queens of American Woodmen. Also included are images of the American Woodmen District Convention in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1930.

 Abstract:  Lowell O. Mellen (1897-1993) was a business consultant in Cleveland, Ohio, who pioneered the training techniques of Training Within Industry (TWI) as a representative of the War Manpower Commission in the Northern District of Ohio during World War II. After the war, he was recruited by General Douglas MacArthur to train supervisors and workers in Japan in the techniques of Training Within Industry in order to quickly stabilize the Japanese economy by making its industrial base more efficient. Mellen's company, Training Within Industry, Inc., trained over one million supervisors and workers in Japan. Mellen's training programs in job instruction, job methods, job relations, problem solving, and job safety are credited as the foundation for industrial programs that stress continuous improvement and lean management. The collection consists of 121 black and white photographs and one 16mm black and white motion picture film.

 Abstract:  Joseph Korabek was born between 1829-1831 in Bohemia-Austria. He immigrated to the United States in 1867 with his wife Barbara and three children, Anna, Josephine, and John. Joseph Korabek was a wagon maker whose shop was located at 1630 Woodland Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio in 1880. His son John Korabek owned a dry goods store in Cleveland. The collection consists of photographs, negatives, cabinet card photographs, postcards, and carte de visites of members of the Korabek family of Cleveland, Ohio. Also included are several views of Cleveland school classes and family homes and businesses, including the J.E. Korabek dry goods stores. A large number of Cleveland studio photographers are represented in this collection.

 Abstract:  Martin Linsey was a Cleveland, Ohio, watercolorist, photographer, and art teacher. Linsey, a graduate of the Cleveland School of Art, was a watercolorist who developed a national reputation for his work by the early 1940s. He also excelled as a photographer, exhibiting prize-winning works at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Linsey's livelihood included painting, teaching art and photography, and producing architectural drawings and personal portraits. The collection consists of approximately 1000 negatives of various historic structures in Cleveland and the Western Reserve, including views of bridges, buildings, churches and synagogues, industry, monuments, and residences. Many of these views were made for the Historic American Buildings Survey.

 Abstract:  Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) was an entrepreneur and inventor whose inventions included the electric traffic signal and the gas mask. Morgan moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1895 and opened his own sewing machine sales and repair shop in 1907. He received a patent on his gas mask in 1912 and formed the National Safety Device Co. to manufacture and market it. He also established the G.A. Morgan Hair Refining Co., The Cleveland Call and Post, and the Wakeman Country Club for African Americans. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Garrett A. Morgan, his family, and friends. Also included are views of his residence, and of his inventions, including the gas mask, traffic signal, and a hair treatment system. The collection also includes views relating to the water intake crib disaster in Cleveland, Ohio in 1917.

 Abstract:  Myron T. Herrick (1854-1929) was a humanitarian, financier, industrialist, Governor of Ohio, and United States Ambassador to France. Herrick served as president and chairman of the board of the Society for Savings, Cleveland, Ohio. He also had numerous other local and national business interests. Herrick was involved in Ohio and national Republican party politics, maintaining close ties with Marcus A. Hanna, William McKinley, and other party notables. He won election as Ohio governor in 1903, serving one term. He was appointed United States Ambassador to France in 1912, serving until November 1914. Herrick played a key role in wartime France, both in his participation in diplomatic relations between combatants and in various humanitarian aid pursuits. Herrick was reappointed Ambassador to France by President Harding in 1921, serving until his death in 1929. the collection consists of 138 black and white photographs relating to Myron T. Herrick's ambassadorship in Paris, France.

 Abstract:  Charles H. Hubbell (1898-1971) was a well-known aviation artist and native of Cleveland, Ohio. During World War I, he served in the Navy and was a draftsman in the design of naval aircraft. He graduated from the Cleveland School of Art in 1922, and became a commercial artist. Hubbell received his private pilots license in 1927 by exchanging aviation art with flight instructors for flying lessons. He was commissioned by Thompson Products of Cleveland to paint the winning aircraft of each year's Thompson Trophy Race. In 1937, the first Thompson Products aviation art calendar by Charles Hubbell was produced. He painted for the yearly calendar until 1969. In 1949, the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) invited Hubbell on an around the world tour. The result was the 1951 calendar featuring the aircraft and operations of MATS. Hubbell was also a consultant to the Thompson Auto-Album and Aviation Museum, and later the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of views of aircraft, rockets, missiles, and drones; power plants; airfields and aviation-related facilities; equipment, and aviation personalities. Hubbell acquired these images for use as a reference source for his aviation artwork.

 Abstract:  Thompson Products Inc. was established in 1900, in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Cleveland Cap Screw Company. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of views of aircraft, personalities, famous flights, and miscellaneous images documenting aviation history in the first half of the 20th century. The images were acquired by Thompson Products from the Dearborn Library-Henry Ford Museum and were used as a supplement to Thompson Products' existing aviation photographic reference library. Included are numerous images of early Wright and Curtiss aircraft, as well as World War I aircraft. The collection also contains many images of aircraft and equipment representing the rapid advances made in aviation technology during the inter-war years.

 Abstract:  James Fitch Millard (1824-1909) was the co-founder of J.F. Millard and Son, a family funeral business. It was patronized by many of the Italian Americans from the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. It underwent several name changes over the years. It was Millard and Betts from 1884-1887, J.F. Millard and Son from 1887-1917, and Millard, Son, and Raper Company after 1917. William C. Millard was a founding member of the Fairmount Club, a gentlemen's social club. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of the Millard family of Cleveland, Ohio, and views of their undertaking businesses, including the Millard & Son hearse and the Millard Son & Raper Company Funeral Directors building at East 105th Street and Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland.

 Abstract:  The Graphic Arts International Union, Local No. 24-P, was founded in 1900 as part of the International Typographical Union but transferred to the jurisdiction of the International Photoengravers Union of North America in 1903. The union merged with the Amalgamated Lithographers of America in 1964 to form the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union. Also in 1964, Akron Local No. 51 was merged into Cleveland Local No. 24-P. The union merged with the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders in 1972 to form the Graphic Arts International Union. In 1966 the Cleveland local absorbed Youngstown Local No. 63 and in 1976 it took in the Photo-Industrial Local No 24-A. The collection consists of views of union activities, including a strike, graphic arts processes, and group and individual portraits of union members.
