 Abstract:  Morris David Shanman (1875-1943) was a Russian Jew who immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio ca. 1881. He and his wife, Esther, established one of the first wholesale dry goods businesses in downtown Cleveland in 1898. M.D. Shanman Company was turned over to family members when Shanman retired in his early forties to devote himself to civic, cultural and religious works. He was the first president of Anshe Emeth Beth Tefilo Congregation, and participated in various philanthropies. The collection consists of one letter (1950), deeds and certificates of ownership (1920-1926), a funeral sermon (1943), dedication programs (1963-1964), certificates of confirmation (1926 and 1932), newspaper clippings, and a resume of Sanford J. Rose.

 Abstract:  The John Huntington Fund For Education was created in 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio, upon the sale of the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute and from annual grants from the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust. These annual grants terminated in 1971, when the John Huntington Art and Polytechnic Trust gave the John Huntington Fund For Education a one-time grant of 9 million dollars. The John Huntington Fund For Education gave individual scholarship grants to students pursuing scientific and vocational education until 1972, after which they gave grants to educational institutions and scholarship programs. The collection consists of minutes, annual reports, financial statements, correspondence, grant proposals and reports, articles of incorporation, legal petitions, newspaper clippings, tax returns, histories, and photocopies of the will and codicil of John Huntington. The majority of the records are concerned with the John Huntington Fund for Education, with a small amount of material from the John Huntington Arts and Polytechnic Trust and the John Huntington Benevolent Trust, as they relate to the John Huntington Fund for Education.

 Abstract:  Wattenmaker Advertising evolved from a business enterprise founded by Jacob Wattenmaker (1894-1968), a Cleveland, Ohio, area businessman and philanthropist. Wattenmaker began his career as owner of a wholesale dry goods store in Cleveland in the 1920s. He then became merchandising manager of Bailey Co., a clothing store. In 1932 he founded his own chain of dress shops and was later named managing director of the Cleveland Fur Institute and Executive Secretary of the Cleveland Fashion Institute. He was a lecturer in merchandising, commerce, and public relations at several area schools, including Fenn College, Cleveland College, and John Carroll University. Subsequently, Wattenmaker opened a public relations and merchandising counseling office which evolved into Wattenmaker Advertising, Inc. after World War II. Wattenmaker Advertising specialized in food and real estate campaigns. Some of its larger campaigns were for the Northern Ohio Food Terminal, the Dry Cleaners Guild, and Zinner's, a flower shop. In 1965, Wattenmaker Advertising won the first Cleveland Advertising Club's Horace C. Treharne Medal for its campaign for the Sandusky Distributing Co. Following Jacob Wattenmaker's death in 1968, control of the company was given to his son, James. The collection consists of advertisements, press releases, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

Worthington was a Cleveland, Ohio, investment broker and civic leader who served as Welfare Director for the city of Cleveland and president of the Cleveland Boys' Bureau, an organization which assisted homeless youth during the depression of the 1930s. Worthington also served as chairman of the Farms Committee, a 1933 program to provide jobs for unemployed Clevelanders. The collection consists of correspondence, reports and publications. The collection pertains primarily to Worthington's work with the Cleveland Boys' Bureau, as its president and chief fund raiser. The correspondence includes material from the Boys' Clubs of America and Union League Foundation of Boys' Clubs, as well as Dudley S. Blossom, a prominent Cleveland philanthropist. The material highlights the efforts of a private charity to deal with the social upheaval and disintegration of the family structure brought on by the 1929 depression.

 Abstract:  The Cleveland Commission on Higher Education is a Cleveland, Ohio, organization of area colleges and universities which focuses on cooperative efforts and common problem solving. The group conducts studies of educational needs, develops long range objectives, and, generally, promotes higher education within the community. The commission was instrumental in the founding of Cuyahoga Community College and the transition of Fenn College to Cleveland State University. It has also been involved in projects to improve the teacher training process for secondary teachers, especially inner-city teachers. The collection consists of minutes, financial records, correspondence, memoranda, officers files, project files, subject files, and other material relating to the operation of the organization. Included are the papers of Hugh Calkins, Frank E. Joseph, and Evan A. Lloyd, officers of the commission. The collection is useful for understanding the issues and problems facing higher education in Cuyahoga County and for understanding the development of Cuyahoga Community College, as well as documenting the cooperative efforts among area institutions of higher education in developing joint programs and courses.

 Abstract:  University Circle, Incorporated was created in 1957 as the University Circle Development Foundation to oversee and coordinate development of the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. Becoming University Circle, Incorporated in 1970, it operated under a 20-year master development plan to preserve the physical environment and reinforce the commitment of members to the area. UCI, Inc. serves as a "land bank" for its members, purchasing, leasing and maintaining properties, and reselling land to members to further their development and promote common purposes. UCI, Inc. also acts as a land use and development consultant, initiating and overseeing construction and assisting environmental and historic preservation projects. It maintains parking facilities, a bus service, and a private security service for the area. It has also entered into urban revitalization projects and cultural, educational, and medical programs in order to strengthen and stimulate relationships with the surrounding communities, particularly the Hough and Fairfax areas. Neil J. Carothers served as UCI's first president, followed by Joseph Pigott, Oliver Brooks, Murray Davidson, and others.  Abstract:  The Former Junior Federation (f. 1927) was an African American women's social club constituted of the former members of the Junior Federation in Cleveland, Ohio. It was originally called the Gertrude Fisher Club after the founder who molded a group of youngsters into an organization that gathered in each other's homes. The aims of the club were to instill an understanding of the body of culture and thought in the world, to train women to become more efficient club members and better citizens, and to promote service and philanthropy as well as social and cultural interests. In the 1950s they became members of the Council of Colored Women and renamed themselves the Junior Girls Federation. By 1965 they had again changed their name, this time to the Former Junior Federation, but continued their social, civic and friendly activities. The collection consists of a constitution, bylaws, membership rosters, minutes, financial statements, correspondence, clippings, and memorabilia.

 Abstract:  The Western Reserve Child Welfare Council was founded in 1911, following the first Western Reserve Conference on the Care of Neglected and Dependent Children, held in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1910. The organizers of this conference recommended a permanent organization be formed to promote cooperation between both public and private child welfare agencies in the Western Reserve. Membership in the Council consisted of two appointed representatives from each agency. The Council produced reports addressing such issues as child labor, infant care, education, institutional care, and dependent mothers. The Council also served as a watchdog organization that could recommend action to the City of Cleveland on child advocacy issues. Leading members included James R. Garfield, Chester C. Bolton, Gilbert P. Jennings, and Dr. Richard Bolt. In 1914, the Western Reserve Child Welfare Council changed its name to the Cleveland Welfare Council. In 1917, it joined with the Cleveland Federation for Charity and Philanthropy in a single organization named the Welfare Federation of Cleveland. The collection consists of a constitution, minutes, budget statements, correspondence, and reports.

 Abstract:  Ronald Brown was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised and educated in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1928, he founded, along with William C. Treuhaft and Elmer C. Hann, the Tremco Manufacturing Company in Cleveland. Brown was a vice president of Tremco. After retirement from the company in 1960, he became a management consultant. Brown was the author of From Selling to Managing: Guidelines for the First-Time Sales Manager. His volunteer and philanthropic activities included work for the Jewish Big Brothers Association of Cleveland, the Citizen's Advisory Board to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, the Ohio Department on Aging, and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education. He married Isabelle Gup in 1934. She was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University. Active in the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women, she served as president of that organization and was active on the national and international level. She also was first chair of the Women's Organization of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, served on the national executive council of the American Jewish Committee, and was the first chair of the Greater Cleveland Women's Committee for Civil Rights. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches and other writings, scrapbooks, newsletters, certificates, and newspaper clippings.
