	Abstract:	The Jewish Community Federation is a central policy making and fundraising agency for the Jewish community of Cleveland, Ohio, which traces its origin to the Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland (founded 1903). The Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland changed its name to the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland in 1926, and in 1930, added a fundraising arm, the Jewish Welfare Fund of Cleveland. In 1951 the Jewish Welfare Federation merged with the Jewish Community Council to become the Jewish Community Federation. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, memoranda, and published literature removed from MS 4563 Jewish Community Federation Records because of sensitive or confidential subject matter. It includes records of the Jewish Community Council's Community Relations Committee and its Conciliation and Arbitration Board, as well as case histories from various Jewish social service agencies. The Community Relations Committee investigated allegations of discrimination and antisemitism, and the Conciliation and Arbitration Board mediated conflicts within the Jewish community.

	Abstract:	The Joseph Family is a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish family. Moritz Joseph arrived in the United States in 1853 from Gauersheim, Rheinpfalz, Germany, during the nineteenth-century German-Jewish immigration period. Settling in Cleveland in 1872, Joseph became successful in the manufacturing ofmen's clothing incorporating that operation as the Joseph and Feiss Company in 1907. The company, formed out of previously operating businesses, was one of the largest manufacturers of men's clothing in the United States. Moritz Joseph married Jette Selig in 1853; the marriage produced four sons. Three of them, Isaac, Fred, and Siegmund, and Siegmund's son Ralph, worked all or part of their careers with the Joseph and Feiss Company. The foruth son, Emil, Emil's son Frank E., and Frank E.'s son William R., became lawyers after graduating from Columbia University Law School. Frank E. Joseph was a promient lawyer and a partner at the Jones, Day, Cockley, & Reavis law firm. The family has been very active in both leadership and philanthropy in Cleveland in institutions such as the Musical Arts Associaton (The Cleveland Orchestra), the Kulas Foundation, and the Warner and Swasey Foundation, and in Jewish communal institutions such as Bellefaire and The Jewish Family Service Association. The collection consists of scrapbooks chronicling the lives of Martha J. Joseph Joseph, Adele Joseph Yelson and Edmil, Frank E. and William R. Joseph. Included in the scrapbooks are correspondence, photographs, programs, and newspaper clippings. The Joseph Family Papers also include the diaries of Emil Joseph from 1877 to 1938 and Ralph S. Joseph from 1903 to 1948, and extensive correspondence of Emil Joseph to Fanny Dryfoos Joseph between 1886 and 1909, and his son, Frank, between 1922 and 1928.

	Abstract:	Albert Arthur Levin was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer and developer of commercial and industrial real estate. A native of Pennsylvania, he moved to Lorain, Ohio, at the age of 10. In 1918, he assumed operation of the family clothing store. After graduation from college in 1934, he became active in Democratic Party politics. He moved to Cleveland and established a law practice in 1938. He later became involved in major real estate developments, including the Marshall and Public Square buildings and the Parmatown and Shoreway shoppong centers. Levin was also a leader in fund drives for the United Jewish Appeal and Bonds for Israel, and was involved in various civic affairs, including serving as foreman of the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury (1962), trustee of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association, and co-chair of the national fund drive for Wilberforce University. He married Maxine Goodman in 1945. Maxine Goodman Levin was a civic activist and philanthropist in her own right. Born in Cleveland, she was a descendant of early Cleveland settlers. Her father, Max P. Goodman, was a prominent Cleveland attorney. Maxine Goodman Levin graduated from Ohio State University, where she studied the history of architecture. She was a founder and first president of the Cleveland Restoration Society and was chairperson of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission. She was also active on the Woodruff Hospital Board, the Women's City Club, Hadassah, Cleveland Chapter, and the World Jewish Congress Division of Northeast Ohio. She served on the boards of Dyke College, Cleveland State University, the East End Neighborhood House, the Jewish Community Federation, and the Catholic Social Services of Cuyahoga County. In 1969, she endowed a chair in urban studies and public service at Cleveland State University, and subsequently was instrumental in establishing the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at that school. Maxine Goodman Levin died in 2002. The collection consists of awards, honors, biographical materials, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and brochures.

	Abstract:	The Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland was established in 1875 as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Hebrew Relief Organization in 1883 to form the Hebrew Relief Association. It was renamed the Jewish Social Service Bureau in 1922. The Bureau affiliated with the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences and helped train students for field placement. In 1943, the Bureau changed its name to the Jewish Family Service Association. The collection consists of minutes, reports, correspondence, financial records, case files, speeches, research papers, and statistics of the Association; minutes, reports, and correspondence of agencies working with the Association; and thirty-eight theses submitted to the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences.

	Abstract:	The Women's Centennial Commission of Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1895 as the Women's Auxiliary of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. The group formally became a part of the Cleveland Centennial Commission on September 25, 1895, when its name was changed to the Woman's Department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission. Mary B. Ingham served as the first president, and Catherine Hitchcock Avery was chairman of the executive board. Woman's Day, a part of the centennial celebration, was held July 28, 1896. In December 1896, an aluminum casket time capsule was filled by members and sealed, to be opened one hundred years later in 1996 during the bicentennial of the founding of Cleveland. The casket was given to the Western Reserve Historical Society for safekeeping. In 1898, the executive committee of the Woman's Department became a permanent organization. Each member designated a successor, and yearly meetings were held. In 1921, a second aluminum casket time capsule was prepared, commemorating the one hundred twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Cleveland. This casket was not sealed until 1927, so that volume five of the Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve, a project begun in 1896 by the Woman's Department, and edited by Gertrude Van Rensselaer Wickham, could be included. That same year, the name of the group was changed to the Women's Centennial Commission. Continued by the successors of the women of 1896 and 1921, a sealed aluminum casket was placed at the Western Reserve Historical Society during the sesquicentennial celebration of Cleveland in 1946. At the one hundred seventy-fifth anniversary of Cleveland in 1971, a fourth time capsule was prepared. The group was revived as the bicentennial of 1996 approached, and in 1996, the contents of the time capsules were unpacked by lineal descendants of the original members. The collection consists of the contents of four aluminum casket time capsules from the years 1896, 1921, 1946, and 1971. The contents include letters, constitutions and bylaws, minutes, resolutions, financial statements, programs, lists, certificates, cards, photographs, invitations, addresses, speeches, essays, poems, newspaper clippings, magazines, newsletters, newspapers, brochures, directories, bulletins, notes, books, pamphlets, annual reports, yearbooks, biographical and genealogical sketches, business cards, medals, ribbons, coins, flags, badges, a gavel, drawings, watercolor prints, maps, calendars, and a poster. Material from philanthropic, social service, cultural, and religious organizations and agencies of the time is included. Documentation on the formation and organization of the Women's Centennial Commission is included, as is a large amount of personal letters and photographs addressed to their descendants by Commission members. The collection also documents how the Cleveland centennial was planned and celebrated in 1896, and how subsequent anniversary years were celebrated. Original manuscripts and copies of the speeches and toasts given during Woman's Day in 1896 were included in the time capsules.

66	Title:	Diana Tittle Mount Sinai Medical Center Research Papers

	Abstract:	Mount Sinai Hospital (1903-2000) had its origins in the Young Ladies Hebrew Association for the Care of the Needy Sick, created in 1892 by nine young women in Cleveland, Ohio. The hospital opened in 1903. In 1996, the nonprofit hospital was sold to a for-profit company, Primary Health Systems (PHS). In March 1999, PHS filed for bankruptcy, and in February 2000, Mount Sinai Hospital closed. The closure of Mount Sinai was a significant development in the history of medicine in the Cleveland area and in the history of the Jewish community. Diana Tittle, author of Welcome to Heights High: The Crippling Politics of Restructuring America's Public Schools and other titles, began research on a book documenting the closure of Mt. Sinai in 2004. Amid concerns that the ongoing consolidation of the health care delivery system and the ongoing national health care debate would overshadow her publication, Tittle reached the decision to pursue an alternative use for her research other than publication. This collection preserves her research in its entirety, including primary source materials she collected and extensive notes from numerous oral history interviews. The collection consists of articles, booklets, brochures, correspondence, drafts, indexes, memoranda, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notes, overviews of specific subjects, reports, a scrapbook, summaries, texts of unpublished material, and other documents related to the donor's work on the history of Mt. Sinai Medical Center.

	Abstract:	United Torch Services was organized in 1957, as the United Appeal, to coordinate fund-raising for Cleveland, Ohio, social service agencies and charities. It was the successor to the Cleveland Community Fund (est. 1919). In 1971 it changed its name to United Torch Services. It became United Way Services in 1978. The collection consists of legal documents, minutes, annual reports, financial records, personnel rosters and service records, correspondence, studies, surveys, clippings, brochures, pamphlets, yearbooks, scrapbooks, posters, and radio scripts.

	Abstract:	The Hebrew Free Loan Association is a non-profit loan association established in 1904 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was originally founded to aid needy Jewish immigrants but later expanded its service to anyone who could show real need. The collection consists of articles of incorporation, minutes, correspondence, financial statements, loan applications, and lists of loans granted. This collection is of value to those interested in loan records as an index to the effects of changing ethnic neighborhood patterns, Jewish migration from the former Soviet Union, and changing economic circumstances upon members of both the Jewish and non-Jewish communities of Greater Cleveland, Ohio. Of particular interest are records pertaining to the Heights Area Project Mortgage Assistance Program, a cooperative attempt by the Jewish Community Federation and the Hebrew Free Loan Association, and the Soviet Emigre Resettlement Program.

The collection is of interest to researchers exploring trends and developments in education in Ohio, 1963-1992. The records document the foundation's activities in teacher training and staff development, curriculum development, materials development and equipment purchase, information sharing, conferences and retreats, enrichment programs, scholarship and awards, and evaluation and research. The material also supports research into foundation management. The collection consists primarily of grant and program files, but also include minutes and publications. 	Abstract:	Russell W. and Rowena Woodham Jelliffe were social workers who in conjunction with the Second Presbyterian Church Men's Club of Cleveland, Ohio, founded the Neighborhood Association, popularly known as the Playhouse Settlement, in 1915. Founded primarily to aid African Americans who had migrated to Cleveland from the rural South, Playhouse Settlement offered the usual social services, but gained note for its dramatic and artistic programs. In 1927 the Jelliffes acquired property which was remodeled as a theater and named the Karamu Theater. In 1941, the Settlement was renamed Karamu House. The Jelliffes shared the directorship of Karamu House until their retirement in 1963, after which they served as trustees of the Karamu Foundation. Russell Jelliffe was also an active member of the Urban League, the Cleveland Community Relations Council on Race Relations, the executive committee of the local branch of the NAACP, and the Board of the Cleveland Council of Human Relations. He was involved with the Group Work Council of the Welfare Federation and was a trustee of Oberlin College and the Cleveland Civil Liberties Union. Rowena Jelliffe was involved in the NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the Urban League, the National Theatre Conference, the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Guidance Center, and the Board of Directors of the American National Theatre and Academy. Both the Jelliffes received numerous honors and awards. The collection consists of correspondence, letters, journals, a diary, date books, speeches, schedules, telegrams, reports, newspaper clippings, Karamu Board of Trustee files, Karamu Foundation files, deeds, publications, blueprints, playscripts, programming information, subject files, memoranda, drawings, manuscripts, research papers and studies, certificates, awards, and scrapbooks. In addition to the personal papers of the Jelliffes, this collection contains a significant collection of the records of Karamu House, including initial negotiations with the Second Presbyterian Men's Club concerning the founding of Neighborhood Association, administrative files, histories, materials concerning the New Building Campaign of the 1940s, correspondence with Harold T. Clark, programming files, materials concerning the search for a new executive director, playscripts, publications, and scrapbooks. Also included in the collection are letters, notes, and a poem written by Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston's play, Sermon. Also included are the records of the Karumu Foundation, 1948-1977.

	Abstract:	The Brush Foundation was created in 1928 by Cleveland inventor Charles F. Brush (1849-1929) to promote "research in the field of eugenics and in the regulation of the increase of population." His initial bequest of $500,000 to establish the foundation derived from the fortune that Brush had amassed through investments and his many patents, most importantly the arc light. The foundation was intended as a memorial to his son, Charles F. Brush, Jr., who had died at the age of thirty-four in 1927. He and his wife, Dorothy, had been pioneers in Cleveland's early birth control movement. The collection consists of brochures, budgets, business cards, correspondence, grant proposals, journal articles, manuals, newspaper articles, notes, pamphlets, reference guides, and speeches.

	Abstract:	The Jewish Community Federation is a central policy making and fundraising agency for the Jewish community of Cleveland, Ohio, which traces its origin to the Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland (founded 1903). The Federation of the Jewish Charities of Cleveland changed its name to the Jewish Welfare Federation of Cleveland in 1926, and in 1930, added a fundraising arm, the Jewish Welfare Fund of Cleveland. In 1951 the Jewish Welfare Federation merged with the Jewish Community Council to become the Jewish Community Federation. The collection consists of correspondence, trustee and committee minutes and reports, annual reports, surveys, membership lists, newspaper clippings, publications, research papers, and scrapbooks. The collection also includes material pertaining to the Federation and its antecedents, as well as to local, national, and international organizations with which the Federation was involved; and subjects of concern to the local Jewish community including the Jewish Welfare Fund. Also, there are numerous surveys, as well as a wide range of material relating to local, national, and international Jewish history.

	Abstract:	Mount Sinai Hospital (1903-2000) had its origins in the Young Ladies Hebrew Association for the Care of the Needy Sick, created in 1892 by nine young women in Cleveland, Ohio. A 29-bed facility, named Mount Sinai Hospital, opened in 1903 at 2373 East 37th Street. In 1916, a new, larger facility was opened at East 105th Street and Ansel Road. Mount Sinai affiliated with Western Reserve University for the training and education of its nurses in 1930, and its doctors in 1947. Mount Sinai served as a major medical resource for Cleveland's east side throughout its history. In 1996, the nonprofit hospital was sold to a for-profit company, Primary Health Systems (PHS). In March 1999, PHS filed for bankruptcy, and in February 2000, Mount Sinai Hospital closed. The collection consists of articles, brochures, a bulletin, a certificate, minutes, a press release, a print, a proposal, records of honor, reports, commemorative tiles, a tribute book, a yearbook, as well as several audio and visual materials.

Medical research was given a high priority. The Women's and Junior Women's auxiliaries provided important assistance to the medical staff and patients, including a nursery school for children of nurses and volunteers. Mount Sinai served as a major medical resource for Cleveland's east side throughout its history. Expansion included a twelve-story building and a kidney dialysis center (1960), a new laboratory facility (1970), and an outpatient clinic in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood (1972). A new medical wing was added to the hospital in the 1980s, and in 1993 an integrated medical campus was opened at the Beachwood facility. In 1996, the nonprofit hospital was sold to a for-profit company, Primary Health Systems (PHS). In March 1999, PHS filed for bankruptcy, and in February 2000, Mount Sinai Hospital closed. The collection consists of reports, minutes, histories, newspaper and magazine articles, booklets, financial records, staff publications, bulletins, medical case histories, drawings, and scrapbooks.

	Abstract:	The Federation for Community Planning was founded in 1913 as the Federation for Charity and Philanthropy, to coordinate funding for the numerous charities in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Welfare Council of Cleveland in 1917 to form the Cleveland Welfare Federation. In 1972 it became the Federation for Community Planning. By 1919 it had given up solicitation of funds and by 1966 their allocation also, evolving into a specialized community planning agency. Today, the organization is known as the Center for Community Solutions. The collection consists of minutes, correspondence, reports, clippings and publications of the Federation for Community Planning, the Welfare Federation, the Federation for Charity and Philanthropy and various bodies allied to these organizations, files of the executive directors Edward D.
