Their son, Tully Bascom Little, was a Cleveland businessman who became chairman of the National Defense Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. W.T. Bascom's son, Gustavus, fought in the Civil War and became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army. Hinman was a soldier in Company E of the 65th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863 yet remained in the service until his company mustered out in November 1865. The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864. He was involved in numerous battles before he mustered out in July, 1865. He married Katherine Humphrey that September.
