| | | | Creator: | Ford, Horatio | | | | Dates: | 1896-1926 | | | | Abstract: | The Eastern Ohio Traction Company, a Cleveland interurban railroad, was formed by the 1902 merger of the Cleveland and Eastern Railway Company, the Cleveland and Chagrin Falls Railway Company, and the Chagrin Falls and Eastern Railway Company. In 1910, the company was reorganized into two affiliated, yet separate companies, the Cleveland and Eastern Traction Company, which was abandoned in 1925, and the Cleveland, Youngstown and Eastern Railway Company, which became the Cleveland and Chagrin Falls Railway in 1915 and was then abandoned in 1925. Horatio Ford (1881-1952) served on the board of several of these lines. Ohio was the heartland of the electric interurban railway early in the 20th century, with a 2,798 mile network. The electric carriers offered the public clean and convenient service, operating at greater frequency and dramatically lower costs vs. the steam railroad. The electric interurban was also an exceedingly attractive business venture. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. | | | | Creator: | Hays, Joseph Family | | | | Dates: | 1857-1987 | | | | Abstract: | Joseph Hays (1838-1916) was the son of Abraham and Bertha Hexter Hays of Storndorf, in the German state of Hesse Darmstadt. After Joseph's mother died in 1844, he and other family members immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, Abraham and Joseph arriving in 1856. Joseph Hays started as a peddler and eventually became involved in the clothing, scrap iron, and real estate business. He married Rosetta Schwarzenberg, and had five children. His daughter, Bertha, married Charles Eisenman, co-founder of Kastriner and Eisenman, later Kaynee Company, a clothing manufacturer. Eisenman was also a founder and first president of the Federation of Jewish Charities (later known as the Jewish Community Federation). Joseph Hays' sons, Louis and Eugene Hays, later purchased Kaynee Company from Eisenman. Louis Hays, who had served as a vice president and trustee of Mt. Sinai Hospital, was president of Kaynee at the time of his death in 1918. His son, Robert, was president of Kaynee from 1937 until 1954, when the company was sold. Robert Hays was also a founding member of Suburban Temple. Louis Hays' wife, Jessie Seligman Feiss, was the niece and adopted daughter of Julius Feiss, owner of Joseph and Feiss Company, which manufactured clothing. His son, Paul Louis Feiss, served as chairman of the company, beginning in 1925. He was also a founder and first president of Mt. Sinai Hospital. His father Jack Sr. was the founder of financial firm Sun Finance & Loan and its holding company Sunamerica. Sun Finance & Loan was formed in the Cleveland area in 1930. Most of its business was in automotive loans, though it also provided mortgages and student loans. In 1969, Jack Sr. formed Sunamerica as a holding company for Sun Finance & Loan in order to expand its financial service package to consumers. Sunamerica dealt in proprietary education, insurance, and computer-time rental. At the height of its success, Sunamerica had 105 offices in eleven states. It was acquired in 1974 by Chemical New York Corporation, which went on to become JPMorgan Chase. Jack Sr. was also the co-founder of the real estate and construction company The Klein Lampl Company, which incorporated in 1917. In 1927, it changed its name to The Klein Lampl Homesite Company, and was the developer of several prominent Cleveland-area subdivisions. Jack Jr. graduated from Harvard University in 1942, at which time he joined his father at Sun Finance & Loan. He married Carolyn Cosel from New Castle, Pennsylvania in 1949 and became president of Sun Finance & Loan in 1959. In addition to his position at Sun Finance & Loan, he was elected president of American Finance Conference in 1963, and went on to serve on the board of the Cleveland Trust Company. Jack Jr. was an active community leader, serving as a trustee of the Cleveland Museum of Art, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Cleveland Play House Foundation, and Western Reserve Historical Society. | | | | Creator: | New York Central Railroad | | | | Dates: | 1880-1957 | | | | Abstract: | The New York Central Railroad first stationed business representatives in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1853, but it was not until 1870 that the railroad established a significant presence in the local railroad economy. During the 1880s-1890s, the New York Central purchased controlling interests in various railroads to secure routes into Cleveland. In the early twentieth century it built and bought lines through and around Cleveland. Yards that were key to New York Central's repair, maintenance, and storage operations in the Cleveland area included Collinwood, Linndale, and Union Depot. In 1921, the New York Central participated in financing of Cleveland Union Terminal on Public Square and eventually established a yard on that site. By 1929, the railroad had 9,963 employees in the Cleveland area, and had established one of two national offices in Cleveland. During the Depression, many yardworkers were laid off, and labor organizations had units within the yards. Many employees served in World War II, a time of unprecedented passenger and freight activity. In the 1950s-1960s, passenger traffic and freight activity declined. In 1975, the remnants of the New York Central and other railroads were consolidated under the name Conrail. It was known until 1979 as Meat Cutters District 427 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, when the international merged with the Retail Clerks International Union to become the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. Sam Pollock served as president, 1953-73, and was succeeded by Frank Cimino, who later became an officer of the international body. The collection consists of records of District 427 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and its predecessor, District Union 427 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, and consists of correspondence, minutes, financial records, reports, contracts, and publications relating largely to the administration of the union, the provision of benefits to its members, and negotiations with employers, particularly the packing-house, meat, and fur industries, as well as independent and chain-operated retail food stores. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. Also included are photographs, diaries, trip journals, correspondence from Simon and Nancy Perkins, financial journals, ledgers and account books of Stephen E. | | | | Creator: | Metzenbaum, Howard M. | | | | Dates: | 1928-1995 | | | | Abstract: | Howard Morton Metzenbaum (1917-2008) was an Ohio Democrat who served in the United States Senate for one appointed term in 1974 and for three consecutive elected terms from 1976 to 1995. Metzenbaum was born on June 4, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Howard Metzenbaum attended Ohio State University, where he earned both his B.A. and L.L.D. Soon after graduating from law school, Metzenbaum founded his own law firm, Metzenbaum, Gaines, Finley, and Stern, in Cleveland. Howard Metzenbaum entered politics at the age of 26, serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from1943 to 1947 and in the Ohio State Senate from 1947 to 1950. He went on to become Ohio Senator Stephen M. Young's campaign manager in 1958. Meanwhile, he had also founded the Airport Parking Company of America (APCOA) with his business partner Alva "Ted" Bonda, who would remain an important associate throughout Metzenbaum's career. Metzenbaum ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1970, losing to Robert Taft, Jr. In 1974, however, he was appointed to the Senate by Ohio governor John Gilligan to replace William Saxbe, who had been appointed to the position of U.S. attorney general. Metzenbaum sought the Senate seat himself in the 1974 Democratic primary but lost to John Glenn. Metzenbaum later ran against incumbent Republican Robert A. Taft, Jr., in 1976, and won. In 1982 he handily won reelection against moderate Republican state senator Paul Pfeifer, and again in 1988 when he was opposed by Cleveland mayor George Voinovich, who ran a mostly negative campaign that accused Metzenbaum of being soft on child pornography. Metzenbaum chose not to run for reelection in 1994, instead supporting his son-in-law Joel Hyatt's ultimately unsuccessful campaign. Howard Metzenbaum's legacy in the United States Senate was as an ardent liberal. Metzenbaum was born on June 4, 1917, in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Howard Metzenbaum attended Ohio State University, where he earned both his B.A. and L.L.D. Soon after graduating from law school, Metzenbaum founded his own law firm, Metzenbaum, Gaines, Finley, and Stern, in Cleveland. Howard Metzenbaum entered politics at the age of 26, serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from1943 to 1947 and in the Ohio State Senate from 1947 to 1950. He went on to become Ohio Senator Stephen M. Young's campaign manager in 1958. Meanwhile, he had also founded the Airport Parking Company of America (APCOA) with his business partner Alva "Ted" Bonda, who would remain an important associate throughout Metzenbaum's career. Metzenbaum ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1970, losing to Robert Taft, Jr. In 1974, however, he was appointed to the Senate by Ohio governor John Gilligan to replace William Saxbe, who had been appointed to the position of U.S. attorney general. Metzenbaum sought the Senate seat himself in the 1974 Democratic primary but lost to John Glenn. Metzenbaum later ran against incumbent Republican Robert A. Taft, Jr., in 1976, and won. In 1982 he handily won reelection against moderate Republican state senator Paul Pfeifer, and again in 1988 when he was opposed by Cleveland mayor George Voinovich, who ran a mostly negative campaign that accused Metzenbaum of being soft on child pornography. Metzenbaum chose not to run for reelection in 1994, instead supporting his son-in-law Joel Hyatt's ultimately unsuccessful campaign. Samuel's brother, John, survived the defense of a British magazine in Delhi, India during the Indian Mutiny while serving in the British Army. Samuel Buckley's son, William, settled in Cleveland, Ohio, and in the 1870s-1880s worked at the Brush Electric Company. He later worked at the Cowles Electric Smelting Company. The collection consists of a certificate of citizenship, correspondence, and newspaper clippings.
