| | | | Creator: | Johnson, Ella Mae Cheeks | | | | Dates: | 1948-2010 | | | | Abstract: | Ella Mae Cheeks Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1904. Orphaned at age four, she was raised by the Davis family. She attended Dallas Colored High School and Fisk University before applying to the School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. Johnson graduated in 1928 with a master's degree in social work. As a social worker, Johnson was first employed by Associated Charities of Cleveland, Ohio. Later, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Welfare in conjunction with the federal program Aid to Dependent Children. She retired in 1961. Johnson married Elmer Cheeks in 1929. They had two sons. Cheeks died in 1941, and Johnson married Raymond Johnson in 1957. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, an avid reader and traveler, and a supporter of a variety of charities. At age 105, she attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. Soon after, with the assistance of a freelance writer, she wrote her autobiography. It was published shortly after her death in 2010. The name of the organization changed to Orthodox Jewish Children's Home and merged with Bellefaire to become Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association (JOHAA) was founded in July, 1888 with open membership to all who had resided at the Orphan Home. The records, beginning in 1938, are a history of the founding and activities of the JOHAA. The Joseph and Feiss Company was incorporated in 1907, and was one of the largest manufacturers of men's clothing in the United States. Moritz Joseph's son Emil became a lawyer, and Emil's son, Frank, was partner at the law firm of Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis. Frank E. Joseph and his wife, Martha, were also active philanthropists. The couple's son, William R. Joseph, Sr. continues to be active in the community. | | | | Creator: | Cafarelli, Carmela | | | | Dates: | 1912-1976 | | | | Abstract: | Carmela Cafarelli was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. | | | | Creator: | Mount Sinai Hospital | | | | Dates: | 1915-2004 | | | | Abstract: | Mount Sinai Hospital had its origins in the Young Ladies Hebrew Association for the Care of the Needy Sick, created in 1892 by nine young women in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1900, they changed their name to the Jewish Women's Hospital Association. A 29-bed facility, named Mount Sinai Hospital, opened in 1903 at 2373 E. 37th St. In 1916, a new, larger facility was opened at E. 105th St. and Ansel Rd. Innovations included outpatient clinics for pediatrics and mental hygiene, established in 1915. A nursing school was included. Mount Sinai affiliated with Western Reserve University for the training and education of its nurses in 1930, and its doctors in 1947. Medical research was given a high priority. The Women's and Junior Women's auxiliaries provided important assistance to the medical staff and patients, including a nursery school for children of nurses and volunteers. Mount Sinai served as a major medical resource for Cleveland's east side throughout its history. Expansion included a twelve-story building and a kidney dialysis center (1960), a new laboratory facility (1970), and an outpatient clinic in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood (1972). A new medical wing was added to the hospital in the 1980s, and in 1993 an integrated medical campus was opened at the Beachwood facility. In 1996, the nonprofit hospital was sold to a for-profit company, Primary Health Systems (PHS). In March 1999, PHS filed for bankruptcy, and in February 2000, Mount Sinai Hospital closed. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson (1870-1958), were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Company and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey (1870-1930). Their son, William Cumming Johnson, Jr. (born 1904), married a great-granddaughter of Noah Mayo Farrin and Agnes Saline Faris Farrin. The collection consists of diaries of John and Elizabeth Johnson, correspondence of the Farrin and Johnson families, genealogical material on the Johnson, Fisher, Plume, Van Wagenen, Schenck, and Brown families, two memory books of William Johnson, Jr., an index to the memory books of Evangeline Johnson, and miscellaneous documents including clippings, estate papers of John and William Johnson, memorials for John and Elizabeth Johnson, and a key to the family code. Under the direction of Jane M. Picker and Lizabeth A. Moody, the organization secured attorneys and provided funding for litigation related to women's issues. Most notably, the fund supported LaFleur, et al. v. Cleveland Board of Education, et al., a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark ruling concerning mandatory maternity leave for female employees. In the 1990s the fund focused on female age discrimination and discrimination faced by American women employed overseas by American companies. The Women's Law Fund disbanded in 2006. He eventually opened a mercantile store in Akron, Ohio, which became known as the M. O'Neil Company. In 1915 he and his son William set up the General Tire and Rubber Company of Akron. O'Neil was active in cultural, civic, and philanthropic organizations in Akron. He married Patience Maher of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1884, and had six children.
