 Abstract:  The Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, an education foundation located in Cleveland, Ohio, was founded by Martha Holden Jennings in 1958. The objective of the Jennings Foundation is to promote excellence in Ohio's primary and secondary schools by funding projects that improve the quality of teaching, teacher training, curriculum development, and school evaluation studies, as well as the creation of educational television programs and provide for in-service educational conferences and seminars. The foundation's main interests are programs that promote more effective teaching in schools and explore new frontiers in education. The collection consists primarily of grant and program files but also include minutes and publications. The grant files include award letters, grant proposals, proposal reviews, correspondence, project reports, photographs, and project evaluations. Program files consist of correspondence, meeting materials, and program descriptions.

 Abstract:  William R. (Bill) Joseph (1946-2012), a specialist in nonprofit law and community leader, was the son of Frank and Martha Joseph. A co-founder of Ohio Citizens for the Arts, he was also a board member and president of many other local nonprofit organizations. Bill Joseph was a member of the sixth generation of the Joseph family in the Cleveland area. His family owned Joseph & Feiss, one of the city's most prominent firms in the garment industry. The collection consists of biographies, birth certificates, certificates, contracts, correspondence, correspondence transcripts, diplomas, eulogies, genealogies, a haggadah (Jewish text that documents the order of the Passover Seder), obituaries, oral histories, photographs, postcards, proclamations, programs, and scrapbooks.

 Abstract:  Ella Mae Cheeks Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1904. Orphaned at age four, she was raised by the Davis family. She attended Dallas Colored High School and Fisk University before applying to the School of Applied Social Sciences at Western Reserve University. Johnson graduated in 1928 with a master's degree in social work. As a social worker, Johnson was first employed by Associated Charities of Cleveland, Ohio. Later, she worked for the Cuyahoga County Department of Welfare in conjunction with the federal program Aid to Dependent Children. She retired in 1961. Johnson married Elmer Cheeks in 1929. They had two sons. Cheeks died in 1941, and Johnson married Raymond Johnson in 1957. He died in 1983. Mrs. Johnson was an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church, an avid reader and traveler, and a supporter of a variety of charities. At age 105, she attended the inauguration of President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. Soon after, with the assistance of a freelance writer, she wrote her autobiography. It was published shortly after her death in 2010. The collection consists of annual reports, booklets, book manuscripts, book proofs, brochures, catalogues, certificates, church directories, citations, correspondence, forms, a guest book, an inauguration ticket, lists, magazine articles, newsletter articles, newspaper articles, notes, passports, proclamations, programs, remarks, speeches, and writings.

 Abstract:  The Ritchie and Hale families were prominent in civic and philanthropic activities in Akron and Summit County, Ohio. Clara Belle Ritchie, daughter of Samuel J. and Sophronia Hale Ritchie, inherited the Hale farm from her uncle, Charles Oviatt Hale, and bequeathed it to the Western Reserve Historical Society when she died in the 1950s. The collection consists of Ritchie and Hale family correspondence, diaries, recollections, clippings, legal files, financial materials, and guest registers of the Hale farm.

 Abstract:  The Jewish Orphan Asylum (also known as the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Home) was founded in 1868 with the mission to care for orphaned or abandoned children. The organization grew with community need, and was relocated to a campus in University Heights in 1938. The name of the organization changed to Orthodox Jewish Children's Home and merged with Bellefaire to become Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association (JOHAA) was founded in July, 1888 with open membership to all who had resided at the Orphan Home. The records, beginning in 1938, are a history of the founding and activities of the JOHAA. The collection consists of booklets, brochures, bulletins, a constitution, correspondence, a directory, Haggadah, a photo album, two black and white photographs, a program, a scrapbook, song sheets, and yearbooks.

 Abstract:  The Joseph family is a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, Jewish family. Moritz Joseph arrived in the United States in 1852 from Gauersheim, Rheinpfalz, Germany. Settling in Cleveland in 1872, Joseph became successful in the manufacture of men's clothing. The Joseph and Feiss Company was incorporated in 1907, and was one of the largest manufacturers of men's clothing in the United States. Moritz Joseph's son Emil became a lawyer, and Emil's son, Frank, was partner at the law firm of Jones, Day, Cockley & Reavis. Frank E. Joseph and his wife, Martha, were also active philanthropists. The couple's son, William R. Joseph, Sr. continues to be active in the community. The collection consists of awards, correspondence, diaries, diplomas, genealogies, guest lists, inventories, news clippings, newsletters, legal records, notebooks, programs, scrapbooks, and assorted writings.

171Title:  Carmela Caferelli Papers

 Abstract:  Carmela Cafarelli was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. The collection consists of memoirs; family histories; notes; musical scores and manuscripts of compositions; an address book; correspondence; catalogues; student notebooks; poetry; scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, reviews of performances, and articles; programs; and a travel journal. Included are musical compositions by Carmela Cafarelli; her father, Rocco Cafarelli; and her teacher, Henry B. Fabiani.

 Abstract:  Mount Sinai Hospital had its origins in the Young Ladies Hebrew Association for the Care of the Needy Sick, created in 1892 by nine young women in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1900, they changed their name to the Jewish Women's Hospital Association. A 29-bed facility, named Mount Sinai Hospital, opened in 1903 at 2373 E. 37th St. In 1916, a new, larger facility was opened at E. 105th St. and Ansel Rd. Innovations included outpatient clinics for pediatrics and mental hygiene, established in 1915. A nursing school was included. Mount Sinai affiliated with Western Reserve University for the training and education of its nurses in 1930, and its doctors in 1947. Medical research was given a high priority. The Women's and Junior Women's auxiliaries provided important assistance to the medical staff and patients, including a nursery school for children of nurses and volunteers. Mount Sinai served as a major medical resource for Cleveland's east side throughout its history. Expansion included a twelve-story building and a kidney dialysis center (1960), a new laboratory facility (1970), and an outpatient clinic in the Cleveland suburb of Beachwood (1972). A new medical wing was added to the hospital in the 1980s, and in 1993 an integrated medical campus was opened at the Beachwood facility. In 1996, the nonprofit hospital was sold to a for-profit company, Primary Health Systems (PHS). In March 1999, PHS filed for bankruptcy, and in February 2000, Mount Sinai Hospital closed. The collection consists of agendas, annual reports, budgets, bylaws, certificates, contracts, constitutions, correspondence, financial statements, handbooks, ledgers, legal briefs, minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notebooks, play scripts, reports, resolutions, rosters, scrap books, histories, publications, speech texts, surveys, and tax records.

 Abstract:  The Fortnightly Musical Club was established by Cleveland, Ohio, women in 1894 to sponsor concerts and cultural programs. It later helped establish the Cleveland Music School Settlement and the Cleveland Institute of Music. The collection consists of programs, anniversary folders, a 1970 inventory, yearbooks, bulletins, guest books, scrapbooks, and minutes which also contain correspondence, financial statements, and lists of officers, members and events. Also included are materials from the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs.

 Abstract:  John Cumming Johnson (1828-1892) moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher (1834-1883). They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson (1870-1958), were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Company and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey (1870-1930). Their son, William Cumming Johnson, Jr. (born 1904), married a great-granddaughter of Noah Mayo Farrin and Agnes Saline Faris Farrin.  Abstract:  The First Congregational Church was founded in 1814 in Kent, Ohio (located in Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio). From 1819 to 1839 it was called the First Presbyterian Church, Franklin Township. In 1839 it became the First Congregational Church, Franklin Township. It later became the First Congregational Church, Kent, Ohio. The collection consists of confession of faith, covenant, articles of practice, minutes of meetings, and list of members (1838). Includes records of the First Congregational Society of Franklin, Ladies Aid Society of Franklin, and Ladies Benevolent Sewing Society of Franklin.  Abstract:  The Women's Law Fund was a nonprofit organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1972 dedicated to eradicating gender discrimination in employment, education, government benefits, and housing. Under the direction of Jane M. Picker and Lizabeth A. Moody, the organization secured attorneys and provided funding for litigation related to women's issues. Most notably, the fund supported LaFleur, et al. v. Cleveland Board of Education, et al., a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court in a landmark ruling concerning mandatory maternity leave for female employees. In the 1990s the fund focused on female age discrimination and discrimination faced by American women employed overseas by American companies. The Women's Law Fund disbanded in 2006. The collection consists of agendas, annual reports, correspondence, financial records, meeting minutes, memorandums, magazine articles, newspaper clippings, reports, resumes, and video tapes.

 Abstract:  Michael O'Neil was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States, settling first in New York City. He eventually opened a mercantile store in Akron, Ohio, which became known as the M. O'Neil Company. In 1915 he and his son William set up the General Tire and Rubber Company of Akron. O'Neil was active in cultural, civic, and philanthropic organizations in Akron. He married Patience Maher of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1884, and had six children. The collection consists of a baptismal certificate, correspondence, the O'Neil family history, a subscription for the Irish Freedom Fund, and a memorial booklet in memory of Michael O'Neil.

 Abstract:  The Eliza Bryant Home for the Aged was the first retirement home for elderly African Americans in Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1896, by Eliza Bryant, and called the Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People. In 1960 it was renamed the Eliza Bryant Home for the Aged. The collection consists of records of patients, guests, and membership, Board of Trustees' minutes, Secretary's record of correspondence, Board of Lady Managers' financial records, constitutions, by-laws, receipts, cancelled checks, and a history of the Home by Helen Smith.
