| | | | Creator: | Knights of Equity | | | | Dates: | 1896-1998 | | | | Abstract: | The Knights of Equity is a Roman Catholic Irish social group first established in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Knights of Equity Supreme Council. It then grew into a national organization. The Cleveland group was active from 1895 to 1905. Three courts were founded in Cleveland, one of which eventually had 5,000 members. After 1905, the group disintegrated in Cleveland, but continued to grow in other cities. In 1954, bylaws first included women in the organization. In 1960, the National Daughters of Erin were officially accepted by the Knights as an auxiliary. | | | | Creator: | Oakwood Club | | | | Dates: | 1872-2007 | | | | Abstract: | Excelsior was a Jewish social club established in 1872 partly in reaction to Jewish exclusion from such clubs as the Union Club. The club sponsored a variety of social events and provided dining and recreational facilities. In 1905, a second Jewish association, Oakwood, was established as a golf club in the suburban area of Cleveland Heights. In 1931, the board of the Excelsior leadership agreed to a merger and Excelsior ceased to exist as a separate entity. The Oakwood Club opened in 1906 with a 9-hole golf course. After expansion, the course was selected as the site of the 1921 Western Open Golf Tournament. After the merger with Excelsior, the clubhouse was expanded, with the addition of squash courts, bowling alleys, and an outdoor swimming pool. During World War II, the U.S. Army's 729th Military Police Battalion utilized the Oakwood clubhouse as a barracks. After the war, further improvements were made. In 1961, the membership approved the purchase of land in Kirtland. This property was never developed and was sold off in 1987. Because of falling revenue, the Oakwood Club decided in 2010 to move its members to the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club and put its 144-acre property up for sale. Jarzynski (1888-1942) was a physician prominent in the Polish-American community of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a founding member of the Medical and Dental Arts Club, president of the League of Polish Organizations, and a trustee of the Musical Arts Association. His wife, Helen Conrad Jarzynski, was also active in Polish organizations, as well as serving on the Women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, publications, and certificates relating to Dr. Jarzynski's career, and, in part, to that of his wife. The correspondence, 1917-1942, includes letters from Ohio Attorney General John W. Bricker regarding draft board examinations during World War I, and an acknowledgment of condolences from Ignace Jan Paderewski. Edith was a member of the girls' social club, Phi Delis, in the 1930s. The club often participated in social activities with a Jewish boys' club, the Copains. They would have outings in various locales through the Cleveland area. Her husband, Isadore Silverman, served in the 470th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Sept. 1943-Jan. 1946. He was trained at Camp Callan in California, 1943-1944, and was later stationed in New Guinea and Panay, 1944-1945. the collection consists of photographs, letters, telegrams, and newspaper clippings. He served in the military, beginning in 1936 as a member of the 107th Cavalry of the Ohio National Guard. He entered active service in 1940, served during World War II and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was president of Cleveland Air Taxi, a helicopter taxi service, and had a strong interest in higher education and the arts. Bolton served with the Council of Foreign Ministers in 1947 and 1948, the Austrian Peace Treaty Conference in 1948, and was special assistant of the U.S. ambassador to France. Kenyon C. Bolton was married to Mary Riding Peters, and had five children.
