| | | Creator: | Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association | | | Dates: | 1929-2008 | | | Abstract: | The Jewish Orphan Asylum (also known as the Cleveland Jewish Orphan Home) was founded in 1868 with the mission to care for orphaned or abandoned children. The organization grew with community need, and was relocated to a campus in University Heights in 1938. The name of the organization changed to Orthodox Jewish Children's Home and merged with Bellefaire to become Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association (JOHAA) was founded in July, 1888 with open membership to all who had resided at the Orphan Home. The records, beginning in 1938, are a history of the founding and activities of the JOHAA. | | | Creator: | Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland | | | Dates: | 1895-1974 | | | Abstract: | The Jewish Family Service Association of Cleveland was established in 1875 as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in Cleveland, Ohio. It merged with the Hebrew Relief Organization in 1883 to form the Hebrew Relief Association. It was renamed the Jewish Social Service Bureau in 1922. The Bureau affiliated with the Western Reserve University School of Applied Social Sciences and helped train students for field placement. In 1943, the Bureau changed its name to the Jewish Family Service Association.
