	Abstract:	Joseph W. Gaskill (b. 1843) was a corporal in Company B, 104th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. The collection consists of a descriptive roll of Company B, 104th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (1862-65), a history of the Company by Gaskill, and Gaskill's diary for 1864, during which time he saw action in Tennessee and Georgia. Includes an unpublished, incomplete manuscript of a book about Abraham Lincoln, written by Gaskill.

	Abstract:	Homer F. Bassett resided in Rockport (now Rocky River), near Cleveland, Ohio. John M. Bassett served in the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Artillery Regiment during the Civil War. The collection consists of correspondence, contracts, and land agreements and deeds to tracts of land in Brooklyn and Rockport, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Includes letters (1861-1863) from John M. Bassett to his family, written while he was stationed in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, giving his personal impressions of the Civil War. Other persons represented include Henry D. Bassett, Homer F. Bassett, Charles R. Jordan and Stephen Jordan.

Gardner, of Berea, Ohio, Addison F. Stockham, of Hambden Ohio, and Newton D. 	Abstract:	George P. Metcalf (born 1844) was a Liverpool, Ohio, native who served in Company D, 136th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. During 1869 he practiced law in Mississippi, where he had a strong interest in the attitudes and actions of residents of this state toward Reconstruction.. The collection consists of reminiscences of Metcalf's childhood on a Medina County, Ohio, farm, his student days in Oberlin, and primarily his service during the Civil War, and his experiences as a lawyer in Mississippi during Reconstruction.

	Abstract:	Carlos Parsons Lyman (b. 1838) was a private in the 6th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and later Captain in the 100th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. His family resided in Mesopotamia, Ohio. The letters and diaries provide a detailed record of his activities while at Camp Dennison and Camp Chase in Ohio (1861-1862), in Virginia and Washington, D. C. (1862-1864), and in Tennessee and Missouri (1864-1865). The collection consists of letters and diaries of Carlos Lyman written during the Civil War, an autobiographical sketch, an 1859 diary, and family papers, including agreement and land deeds, certificates, financial receipts and newspaper clippings.

	Abstract:	Mortimer Dormer Leggett (1821-1896) was a colonel of the 75th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War. He participated in the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg and was promoted to Brigadier General. The collection consists of correspondence with Captain W.R. Hodges and General George McGinnis concerning events at Vicksburg and Shiloh (1887), and three typed articles: "General Lewis Wallace's Division at Shiloh," "Lessons of the War," and "The Siege of Vicksburg."

	Abstract:	Edward F. Nydegger (1831-1909) was a native of Aarberg, Switzerland who immigrated with his family to the United States in 1850 and settled in Weinsberg, Ohio. During the American Civil War he served in the 11th regiment, Indiana Infantry, and sketched many of the scenes he encountered during his travels. The collection consists of a scrapbook containing penciled drawings of Civil War scenes, a chronicle of the Nydegger family's emigration from Switzerland to Ohio in 1850, a family genealogical history, the Nydegger coat of arms, a Swiss tax receipt, a religious card from Nydegger's teacher in Aarberg, a record of Nydegger's experiences as a soldier, newspaper clippings, and religious mottos drawn and embellished by Nydegger.

He commanded the 78th Ohio Volunteer Militia during the American Civil War, served as United States Commissioner of Patents (1871-1874), and practiced law in Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of eighteen diaries and miscellaneous papers. There are lengthy entries concerning trips to Mississippi (1862 and 1863-1864) and Morgan's Raiders in Ohio (1863).

His son Wesley served in the 9th New York Cavalry during the American Civil War, while another son, Bradford, served in the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, recipes (in German and English), song lyrics, an account of the early settling of Chandler's Valley, Pennsylvania, letters in German script (1855-1874) from family members to immigrant relatives in the United States, a register of Company F of the 9th New York Cavalry, and miscellaneous documents. Topics of the correspondence include the Civil War, and farm life in Pennsylvania.

	Abstract:	Wilbur F. Hinman was a soldier in Company E of the 65th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Chickamauga in 1863 yet remained in the service until his company mustered out in November 1865. The collection consists of letters from Hinman to his family in Berea, Ohio, while he was in the service. Topics include the battle of Stone's River at Murfreesboro in 1863 and the Atlanta campaign of 1864. Also included are a letter from David Hinman to his wife, and a letter to Wilbur Hinman from Carrie Starr.

	Abstract:	Samuel Kinsey Maguire (d. 1862) was the son of Captain George Maguire of Christine, Delaware. He married Charles Anna (Annie) Smith ca. 1859 and they had two children, Anna Louise and William. In 1861 Samuel joined the 72nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers (Baxter's Gunners) and served as quartermaster until he died in service at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, on October 9, 1862. The collection consists of letters from Samuel K. Maguire to Annie Smith Maguire (1857-1862). The letters of 1861-1862 contain accounts of army life and of battles, including Sharpsburg and Harpers Ferry. Also included are a letter from "Lulu" (probably Anna Louise Maguire) to "Mama" (1876), and genealogical material on the Maguire family.

	Abstract:	Andrew W. McCormick (b. 1830) was a Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, native who was editor and publisher of the Marietta Republican. He was a captain in the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was captured twice during the American Civil War. Afterwards he entered law practice and became a Probate Court Judge in Washington County, Ohio. The collection consists of memoirs written during a trip to Colorado in 1893-1894, and a history of the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, with an account of McCormick's experiences as a prisoner of war.

	Abstract:	Zerah Coston Monks was a teacher from Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. After serving with a Union regiment during the American Civil War, he married Hannah Rohrer, of Stewart's Run, Venango County, Pennsylvania. His cousin, Andrew J. Monks, was Ordnance Sergeant of the 105th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in 1863. The collection consists of correspondence, a Civil War diary, biographical sketches, and poetry, concerning the Monks, Rohrer, and Conpropst families.

	Abstract:	Peter Henry Kaiser (1840-1929) was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who grew up in the Dutch Valley area of Tuscarawas County, Ohio. He was an amateur historian and wrote numerous short stories about his childhood home in Tuscarawas County. His second wife, Beza (Boynton) Kaiser, also wrote stories about the early history of Tuscarawas County. Their children were Ella Kaiser Carruth and John Boynton Kaiser. The collection consists of diaries of Peter Henry Kaiser, writings by various Kaiser family members, correspondence, a class roll book, an account book, genealogical notes on the Kaiser, Boynton and Culver families, newspaper clippings, a scrapbook, land records, and miscellaneous materials. The collection deals primarily with the personal lives of Peter Henry Kaiser and his family. Included are some historical materials on Tuscarawas County and three letters Peter Henry Kaiser wrote during the Civil War.
