In 1861 Samuel joined the 72nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers (Baxter's Gunners) and served as quartermaster until he died in service at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, on October 9, 1862. The collection consists of letters from Samuel K. Maguire to Annie Smith Maguire (1857-1862). The letters of 1861-1862 contain accounts of army life and of battles, including Sharpsburg and Harpers Ferry. Dunbar, a farm laborer from Newburgh, Ohio, enlisted in Company B, Second Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, at Camp Wade in Cleveland, Ohio, in August 1861. Trained at Camp Dennison, Ohio, his company left for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in January 1862, Dunbar having been appointed sergeant and later quartermaster sergeant. While the regiment was defending the Kansas and Missouri borders during the Civil War, Dunbar became ill and was discharged on October 2, 1862, returning after a lengthy journey home via wagon and train to Newburgh. During the American Civil War, he served in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery, organized in Cleveland in 1861 and trained at Camp Wood, Ohio. In December 1862, McLeish and several others in the battery were discharged for ill health. The collection consists of two diaries, one written anonymously and the other written by Private John McLeish. The anonymous diary chronicles the writer's service in the 9th Ohio Independent Battery from January 10-August 31, 1862. He was stationed at Camp Thomas, Columbus, Ohio and saw duty in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky from June 1862 through the summer of 1864. He fought in the Battle of Chattanooga and the Battle of Chickamauga and apparently died while in service sometime before November 1, 1864.
