The GAR worked on both the state and national levels for issues such as pensions and the establishment of soldiers' homes. By 1908 there were a total of 8 GAR posts in Cleveland, with a membership of 886. Five additional posts were located elsewhere in Cuyahoga County, with 129 additional members. Its term of service was spent in garrison duty at Washington, D.C. It was mustered out on Aug. 23, 1864. After the war its veterans held annual reunions.
