Terry was a business executive in Cleveland, Ohio, in the incandescent lamp industry with broad philanthropic interests related to World War I relief. Terry established the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) with Burton G. Tremaine in 1901. Formed ostensibly as a consortium of small lamp makers in order to compete with industry giants such as General Electric and Westinghouse, NELA was found to be secretly and 75% financed by General Electric during a federal anti-trust suit in 1911. Terry served as vice president of GE and under his leadership Nela Park was built, one of the first campus-like research and production facilities in the U.S. Terry's deep interest in World War I led to the establishment of the Nela Fund. Terry supported and corresponded with orphans and soldiers of the war, and acquired a large collection of posters, publications, and artifacts relating to the historical significance of World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, reports, ledger pages, clippings, publications, postcards, and photographs relating to Terry's personal life, business activities and, principally, his interest in, and activities relating to, World War I. The general history and aftermath of World War I is detailed in a series of scrapbooks. He emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1905, and settled in Cleveland in 1906. Starting out as a seller of Cleveland picture postcard scenes, he expanded the business to include greeting cards. By 1932, the Sapirstein Card Company began designing and manufacturing its own cards. In 1938, the company changed its name to American Greetings Publishers, and in 1952 to American Greetings Corporation. Jacob Sapirstein remained president of the company until 1960, when his son, Irving Stone, succeeded him. The collection consists of correspondence relating to business operations, philanthropic relationships with various Jewish communal institutions, and family. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. Olstyn founded the Home Owners Protective League in 1937 as a lobby group for efficient government and lower taxes and became very vocal in the battle against higher taxes and increased welfare spending. He was also active in many Polish-American groups, including the Cleveland Society of Poles, the Harmonia Chopin Polish Singing Society, and Marymount Hospital. The collection consists of a time and payroll book for the Olstyn Carriage Company, 1910-1914, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous printed materials. The clippings highlight Olstyn's real estate career and his battles with city government over taxes. She became a city councilwoman from Cleveland's Ward 7 in 1982. The collection consists of personal papers and the records and subject files relating to Lewis' work with the Model Cities Association, Neighborhood Youth Corps, and other community organizations. Included are articles of incorporation, bylaws, trustee minutes, monthly reports, financial records, proposals, correspondence, memoranda, residency lists, posters, and newspaper clippings. Becoming University Circle, Incorporated in 1970, it operated under a 20-year master development plan to preserve the physical environment and reinforce the commitment of members to the area. UCI, Inc. serves as a "land bank" for its members, purchasing, leasing and maintaining properties, and reselling land to members to further their development and promote common purposes. UCI, Inc. also acts as a land use and development consultant, initiating and overseeing construction and assisting environmental and historic preservation projects. It maintains parking facilities, a bus service, and a private security service for the area. It has also entered into urban revitalization projects and cultural, educational, and medical programs in order to strengthen and stimulate relationships with the surrounding communities, particularly the Hough and Fairfax areas. Neil J. Carothers served as UCI's first president, followed by Joseph Pigott, Oliver Brooks, Murray Davidson, and others. He founded the Vlchek Tool Company, one of the largest drop forged tool manufacturing companies, with 69 branches in various cities, and the Vlchek Plastics Company which produces molded plastic articles. The collection consists of the published reminiscences of Vlcek's life, written in Czech, and the English translation by Fern Long; also, commemorative scrapbooks of Vlcek's accomplishments and the 50th anniversary of the Vlchek Tool Company, and clippings. The collection pertains to Vlcek's life in Europe, as an immigrant in Cleveland, and his rise as an industrialist through the growth of his tool company. His autobiography is a rich source of immigrant history. It chronicles his childhood, with details of everyday life in his village, tells of his courtship and marriage, travels through Europe seeking work as a smithy, his decision to immigrate and the trip to America. After his marriage to Fannie Fertel in 1903, Freiberger began his 60+ year career at Cleveland Trust Company as a clerk, where he was eventually promoted to Board Chair in 1941. Freiberger served as director of Forest City Publishing Company, which published the Plain Dealer and Cleveland News, as well as nine other businesses. He also served in leadership positions at the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, Cleveland Marshall School of Law, the Great Lakes Exposition, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland, Mt. Sinai Hospital, the Playhouse Foundation, and Western Reserve University. Recognition of service included the Adelbert College Distinguished Alumni Award, the American Heart Association Award of Merit for Distinguished Service, the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce Medal for Public Service, the Jewish Community Federation's Charles Eisenman Award, and the Western Reserve University Honorary Doctorate of Humanities. Freiberger died on April 28, 1969, in Cleveland at age 89. | | | | Creator: | Hardman, Anson | | | | Dates: | 1864-1965 | | | | Abstract: | Anson Hardman was the general advertising manager of Ohio Bell Telephone Company, 1924-1951. Hardman initiated many advertising campaigns which were adopted by other utilities and were recognized by the advertising industry. Hardman directed Ohio Bell's weekly radio program, the "Ohio Story", contributing historical research and script composition as well as directing the show. Hardman began his own public relations and advertising company, Anson F. Hardman and Associates, in 1951. He also served in various editorial and advertising capacities for the periodical Inside Ohio. The collection consists of scripts and script drafts, administrative papers, correspondence, story ideas and suggestions, research articles, subject lists, broadcast material, clippings, music scores, photographs, and biographical information relating to the activities of Anson Hardman. The collection pertains largely to the development of radio programing, from original idea to final casting, broadcast, and publicity. It merged into the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1964.
