| | | | Creator: | Cleveland Jewish History Sources | | | | Dates: | 1819-1956 | | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Jewish History Sources Collection is a card file assembled between 1954-1956 by the American Jewish History Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, to support a planned volume on the history of Cleveland, Ohio, Jewry. This intention was realized with the publication of History of the Jews of Cleveland by Lloyd P. Gartner in 1978. Source material for this card file, which covers the span from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, includes both the national Anglo-Jewish press and local Cleveland sources, including the general press, the Anglo-Jewish press, and Jewish communal records. Rabbi Jack J. Herman and Judah Rubinstein were the local Cleveland researchers for the project. The collection consists of 16,000 index cards containing information about Cleveland's Jewish community that was obtained primarily from newspapers. These cards have been arranged into fourteen broad categories: Arts; Charities; Clubs and Societies, Various; Community Services; Economic Life; Education; Political Affairs; Population; Sermons and Lectures; Social Life; Synagogues; Synagogue Related; Umbrella Organizations, and Zionism. Within these categories, primary and sometimes secondary sub-headings are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically. As prescribed by the AJHC, each research finding was typed on 4x6, un-ruled index cards and described in the following top-down order: top left, the city and chronological period; top right, topical classification; single line description of the finding; excerpt(s) from the finding. In many instances, the researchers stapled to the card photocopies of pertinent portions of the source material. Voinovich | | | | Dates: | 1977-1989 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate. The collection consists of the mayor's office files transferred in 1989 to the Western Reserve Historical Society as an agent of the Ohio State Archives under the Ohio Public Records Law. It began producing automotive parts and underwent several reorganizations, becoming the Electric Welding Products Company (1908), the Steel Products Company (1915), and Thompson Products Inc. (1926). It expanded to include branch plants and the production of aircraft parts, and fostered a company union, the Automotive and Aircraft Workers Alliance (later the Aircraft Workers Alliance). It grew during World War II due to defense contracts. After the war it entered the jet and aerospace industries. It merged in 1958 with Ramo Wooldridge Corporation to become TRW Inc. Outside activities include the National Air Races and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of press releases intended to introduce new products or announce new achievements in the field of aviation and space, and includes images of aircraft, aviation, and space related subjects. These images were used by Thompson Products as a photographic reference of industry developments in aviation and space. | | | | Creator: | American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, Cleveland Chapter | | | | Dates: | 1958-1978 | | | | Abstract: | The American Civil Liberties Union was founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin and a group of associates formerly of the National Civil Liberties Bureau. The Cleveland, Ohio, chapter of the union was founded in 1922 and remained active throughout the 1920s and 1930s focusing on cases concerning unionization, Communism, and religious freedom. The chapter closed during World War II, but was revived in 1950 with the advent of McCarthyism. In 1954, the national ACLU recognized the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio as the official affiliate responsible for helping local Ohio chapters coordinate more easily on larger statewide cases and issues. The Cleveland chapter continued to struggle with budget woes and lack of membership following its revival. In the 1950s and 1960s the chapter focused its efforts on political rights; in the 1960s and 1970s the group became concerned with the rights of educators, students, prisoners, the mentally ill, and women. Among other initiatives, the Cleveland chapter completed an extensive court observation project of the Cuyahoga County justice system and helped to raise money for the legal defense funds of those indicted in the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970. | | | | Creator: | Bailey, Walter K. | | | | Dates: | 1975-1991 | | | | Abstract: | Walter K. Bailey was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman. A native of Cleveland and the son of L.A. Bailey, founder of the Bailey Company department store, Walter Bailey was raised in East Cleveland and graduated from Oberlin College in 1919. He went to work for the Warner & Swasey Company, a leading manufacturer of machine tools, especially turret lathes, and telescopes and optical equipment, in 1919. By 1928, the company was the world's leading manufacturer of turret lathes, and during World War II produced half of all the turret lathes made in the U.S. After learning the business on the shop floor, he joined the national sales force of Warner & Swasey in 1921, moving up in management and eventually becoming vice president of sales in 1942. During World War II he was in charge of manufacturing operations, and became vice president of the company in 1949. He was president and chief executive officer from 1955-1962, chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1962-1964, and chairman of the board until his retirement in 1967. Under Bailey's leadership, Warner & Swasey diversified and acquired several smaller companies, growing into a major international producer of machine tools and related products. Bailey also was active in various philanthropic organizations in Cleveland, and served as a trustee of Oberlin College, the Musical Arts Association, and Fairmount Presbyterian Church. The collection consists of a Warner & Swasey Company history compiled in 1975 by Walter Bailey. Included is an illustrated typescript; followed by supporting documents, reports, illustrations, publications, and newspaper clippings. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The che collection consists of albums and loose photographs depicting the unit at outings, encampments, celebrations, and ceremonial services, including the inaugurations of Presidents William McKinley and William Howard Taft, and the funerals of President William McKinley, Senator Marcus A. Hanna, and U.S. Ambassador to France Myron T. Herrick. Locations depicted include Dover Bay, Ohio; Camps Perry, George Crook, McKinley, Beaumont, Nash, and other military camps in Ohio and other states; and in France during World War I. Also included are views of Troop A's Mexican border service in 1916. | | | | Creator: | Voinovich, George V. | | | | Dates: | 1979-2003 | | | | Abstract: | George Victor Voinovich was born in 1936 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Ohio University for his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Ohio State University in 1961. Following his marriage to Janet Allan in 1962, he established a law practice in his Collinwood neighborhood. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1966, became Cuyahoga County Auditor in 1971, and was elected a Cuyahoga County commissioner in 1976. He also served one term as Lieutenant Governor under James A. Rhodes. Voinovich was elected mayor of the city of Cleveland in 1979 and served for ten years, restructuring the city's finances, promoting neighborhood revitalization, and supporting development of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among other achievements. The National Civic League awarded the city of Cleveland the "All American City Award" three times during Voinovich's tenure. He was elected Governor of Ohio in 1990. From 1999-2011, he represented Ohio in the United States Senate.
