Bailey, founder of the Bailey Company department store, Walter Bailey was raised in East Cleveland and graduated from Oberlin College in 1919. He went to work for the Warner & Swasey Company, a leading manufacturer of machine tools, especially turret lathes, and telescopes and optical equipment, in 1919. By 1928, the company was the world's leading manufacturer of turret lathes, and during World War II produced half of all the turret lathes made in the U.S. After learning the business on the shop floor, he joined the national sales force of Warner & Swasey in 1921, moving up in management and eventually becoming vice president of sales in 1942. During World War II he was in charge of manufacturing operations, and became vice president of the company in 1949. He was president and chief executive officer from 1955-1962, chairman of the board and chief executive officer from 1962-1964, and chairman of the board until his retirement in 1967. Under Bailey's leadership, Warner & Swasey diversified and acquired several smaller companies, growing into a major international producer of machine tools and related products. Bailey also was active in various philanthropic organizations in Cleveland, and served as a trustee of Oberlin College, the Musical Arts Association, and Fairmount Presbyterian Church. The collection consists of a Warner & Swasey Company history compiled in 1975 by Walter Bailey. Included is an illustrated typescript; followed by supporting documents, reports, illustrations, publications, and newspaper clippings. | | | | Creator: | Wade, Jeptha Homer Family | | | | Dates: | 1771-1957 | | | | Abstract: | The Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of correspondence, wills, diaries, autobiographical sketches, memoranda, deeds, contracts, drawings, financial records, passport documents, land grants, notes, receipts, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks, relating to Jeptha Homer Wade and his role in the telegraph industry in the Midwest, and to his son, Randall Palmer Wade, and grandson, Jeptha Homer Wade, Jr. Includes letters from or about Ezra Cornell, Amos Kendall, Samuel F.B. Morse, and James A. Garfield. Personal correspondence related to members of the Wade family, including Ellen Howe Garretson Wade and Ellen Howe Garretson, is included, as is travel journals written by various family members. The Wade family interest in spiritualism, particularly that of Jeptha Homer Wade after the death of his son Randall in 1876, is well documented in his personal correspondence. Educated in Cleveland at Central High School and Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University, Ruth Wiener married Jacob L. Einstein in 1903. His father, Leopold Einstein, along with several cousins, had founded the Ullman Brothers (later the Ullman, Einstein) Company, one of the largest liquor distilleries in the United States. Ruth Wiener Einstein's grandfather, Abraham Aub, was a founder and first president of the Jewish Orphan Asylum (later, Bellefaire). Her father, Abraham Wiener, also served as a president of that organization and was the Director of Charities and Corrections (1889-1901) under Cleveland mayor John Farley. Her mother, Bella Aub Wiener, was one of the founders of the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women, and the Council Educational Alliance (later the Jewish Community Center). Ruth Wiener Einstein founded Cleveland's Jewish Big Sisters in 1920. She also served as a Board member of the Cleveland Section, National Council of Jewish Women; Montefiore Home; Bellefaire; Jewish Family Service Association; Jewish Community Center; and the Jewish Community Federation. One of her most notable achievements was the founding of Council Gardens, a housing complex for the elderly. She and Jacob Einstein had three children; Paul (Einstein) Eden, Edith (Mrs. Samuel O. Freedlander), and Jane (Mrs. Eldy S. Gross). The group used the march to highlight their demands that all people be able to meet basic needs with dignity. From the GCWRO grew a state affiliate and a national organization, the National Welfare Rights Organization. By the mid-1970s, GCWRO was a funded organization through the United Way with Minnie Player as director. Carolyn Miller was appointed executive director of the group following Ms. Player's death in 1983. GCWRO evolved into an organization to advocate for and educate those receiving public assistance. Outreach programming efforts included: Minnie's House, a women's center developed to focus on the specific issues of low-income women; the Give-a-Christmas program, aiding those with great need at the holidays; and, various programs and seminars on job training, self-sufficiency, and parenting. Co. | | | | Dates: | 1891-1982 | | | | Abstract: | The Halle Brothers Company (1891-1982), a department store known for high quality merchandise and superior service, began on February 7, 1891 as a small hat and fur shop operated by brothers Samuel H. (1868-1954) and Salmon P. Halle (1866-1949). It was located at 221 Superior Street near Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio. They purchased the business from Captain T. S. Paddock. In 1893 the business was moved to Euclid Avenue and East 4th Street due to a need for more space. It was also around this time that women's ready to wear clothing began to be carried by the store. In 1902 the company was incorporated, changing its name from Halle Brothers to The Halle Bros. Co. The store continued to grow, adding both space and departments. A new building was constructed at Euclid and East 12th Street where the company moved in 1910. An addition was opened in 1914 allowing for the addition of new departments including furniture, toys, and sporting goods. In 1921 Salmon P. Halle resigned as president to devote himself to philanthropic work and other private interests. Samuel Halle then became president. By 1927 a new building, the Huron-Prospect store was opened in the Playhouse Square district. Branch stores were opened in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1929 and Canton, Ohio, in 1930. Although losses did occur during the Depression, business bounced back after World War II allowing Halle Bros. Co. to open suburban branches, beginning with a Shaker Square store in 1948. Walter Halle, son of Samuel, became president in 1946 and Samuel moved to the position of chairman of the board. There was also expansion to their main downtown Euclid Avenue store which was completed in 1949. Problems began to arise in the 1960s stemming from their over-expanded downtown store and sales competition from stores such as the Higbee Co. and May Co. In 1970 Halle Bros. Co. was merged with Marshall Field and Company of Chicago. Operations continued to decline and Chisholm Halle, son of Walter who had become president in 1966, resigned in 1974. Medium-priced goods were introduced but failed help the stores and in 1981 they were sold to Associated Investors Corporation which closed or sold all stores in 1982. | | | | Creator: | Cleveland Jewish History Sources | | | | Dates: | 1819-1956 | | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Jewish History Sources Collection is a card file assembled between 1954-1956 by the American Jewish History Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, to support a planned volume on the history of Cleveland, Ohio, Jewry. This intention was realized with the publication of History of the Jews of Cleveland by Lloyd P. Gartner in 1978. Source material for this card file, which covers the span from the early nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, includes both the national Anglo-Jewish press and local Cleveland sources, including the general press, the Anglo-Jewish press, and Jewish communal records. Rabbi Jack J. Herman and Judah Rubinstein were the local Cleveland researchers for the project. The collection consists of 16,000 index cards containing information about Cleveland's Jewish community that was obtained primarily from newspapers. These cards have been arranged into fourteen broad categories: Arts; Charities; Clubs and Societies, Various; Community Services; Economic Life; Education; Political Affairs; Population; Sermons and Lectures; Social Life; Synagogues; Synagogue Related; Umbrella Organizations, and Zionism. Within these categories, primary and sometimes secondary sub-headings are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically. As prescribed by the AJHC, each research finding was typed on 4x6, un-ruled index cards and described in the following top-down order: top left, the city and chronological period; top right, topical classification; single line description of the finding; excerpt(s) from the finding. In many instances, the researchers stapled to the card photocopies of pertinent portions of the source material.
