 Abstract:  Anna Sotak (ca. 1893-1976) was an officer of State Savings and Loan in Cleveland, Ohio. She was also active in local Slovak fraternal organizations. The collection consists of individual portraits and group portraits of Anna M. Sotak, her family and friends, and views of the State Savings and Loan Company office in South Euclid, Ohio. Also included are views of the Ladies Pennsylvania Slovak Catholic Union convention, 1960 and 1968, and views of various trips taken by Sotak.

203Title:  Sigmund Braverman Photographs

 Abstract:  Sigmund Braverman (1894-1960) was a Cleveland, Ohio, architect who designed many synagogues and other buildings throughout Cleveland, the United States, and Canada. Born in Austria-Hungary, he came to the United States at age 10 and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1917. After service in World War I, he came to Cleveland in 1920 and opened an architectural practice. From 1932-1935, he served as assistant, and later acting, Cleveland city architect. In 1948, he formed a partnership with Moses P. Halperin, known as Braverman and Halperin, Architects. Synagogues in Cleveland designed by Braverman included the Young Israel Synagogue, Warrensville Center Synagogue, Temple Emanu El, Temple on the Heights, and Fairmount Temple. His work in Cleveland also included the Orthodox Home for the Aged, Cleveland Hebrew Schools, the Bureau of Jewish Education, and apartment buildings, theaters, shopping centers, schools, and restaurants. He was a member of many professional architectural organizations, and published articles on the subject of synagogue architecture. Braverman was also active in several Cleveland Jewish organizations, including the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Jewish Community Center, and the Zionist movement. He married Libbie L. Braverman in 1924. The collection consists of views of synagogues and other Jewish community facilities in Cleveland, Ohio, and cities throughout the United States and Canada, designed by the Cleveland architectural firm of Braverman and Halperin. Also included are several portraits of Sigmund Braverman.

 Abstract:  Anna Wing (ca. 1837-?), born in Ohio, was married to Cyrus Fernando Wing (d. 1865) in Sandusky County, Ohio, in 1859. Cyrus Fernando Wing died during the American Civil War while serving with the 72nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Their daughter, Anna E. Wing Mowry (ca. 1860-?) was married to Richard E. Mowry (1858-1904) of Sandusky County, Ohio. The collection consists of individual portraits of identified and unidentified family members and friends of the Anna Wing family of Ohio.

The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Julius Amber, his family and friends, and views of his activities with the Jewish National Fund in Cleveland, Ohio and in Israel. Included are photographs of Hubert H. Humphrey and Charles Vanik.

 Abstract:  Richard N. Campen was a Cleveland, Ohio, area architectural historian who authored numerous books and articles on architecture in Ohio and the Western Reserve. His work not only dealt with architectural styles, but with particular architects as well. The collection consists of views of buildings throughout the Western Reserve and Ohio. These photographs were used in the compilation of two books by Campen; Architecture of the Western Reserve (1971) and Ohio - an Architectural Portrait (1973).  Abstract:  Ralph Hayes (1894-1977) Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist who served as secretary of the City Club of Cleveland, assistant to Secretary of War Newton D. Baker, Executive Director of the New York Community Trust, Vice President of Transamerica Corporation and Coca-Cola Company. He established the Common Wealth Trust in his will. The collection consists of portraits of Ralph Hayes, his friends, business and political associates, and family. Included in the collection are portraits of presidents Wilson, Harding, Hoover, and Roosevelt, and General John Pershing. Also included are views of a United States Army Air Corps flight demonstration, ca. 1918.

 Abstract:  The Consumers League of Ohio is a political action organization concerned with the welfare of the laboring class. It lobbies for legislation in their interests. Men were admitted in 1921. the collection consists of photographs relating to personnel and investigative activities of the Consumers League of Ohio. Included are photographs of child workers, displays, the Governor's Committee on Migrant Labor, and portraits.

 Abstract:  Saint John's African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first African American church established in Cleveland, Ohio. Chartered by the African Methodist Episcopal Society in 1836, services were first held in members' homes. The first church building was dedicated in 1850. In 1908, after several moves to various church buildings in the nineteenth century, the congregation erected a new church building at East 40th Street and Central Avenue, where it remains. The collection consists of group portraits and views of groups and activities of members of Saint John's African Methodist Episcopal Church of Cleveland, Ohio. Included are photographs of choirs, Sunday School classes, and church boards.

 Abstract:  The City Club of Cleveland is a Cleveland, Ohio, men's club formed in 1912 to provide a platform for the discussion of issues of contemporary interest. Women were admitted in 1972. A number of noted individuals have addressed the Club's forum. The collection consists of views of the City Club, including its building, meetings, dinners, and programs. The program views include photographs of the Club's "Anvil Review," a satirical production written, directed and performed by club members. Photographs were taken by Cleveland Press photographers.

 Abstract:  A. H. Zychick was a Cleveland, Ohio, attorney and United States Commissioner General to the Great Lakes Exposition. The Great Lakes Exposition was held during the summers of 1936 and 1937 on the waterfront of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Among the most popular attractions was the Billy Rose Aquacade, featuring water ballet shows starring Johnny Weismueller and Eleanor Holm. The collection consists of photographs, postcards, and newspaper clippings accumulated by A. H. Zychick. Photographs include group portraits and views of A. H. Zychick, various Exposition and government officials, United States government exhibits, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Exposition.
