181Title:  Walton-Jennings Family Photographs

 Abstract:  John Whittlesey Walton was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and philanthropist. The nephew of Charles Whittlesey, Walton started a ship chandlery business and co-founded the Upson-Walton Company in 1893. In 1867, Walton was one of the men responsible for the revival of the YMCA in Cleveland. From 1874-1926, Walton was actively involved in charity, serving during this period as treasurer of the Bethel Associated Charities. Throughout his life, Walton was keenly interested in the field of sociology and in the emerging scientific approach to social work. His daughter, Gladys Walton, was involved in numerous dramatic and musical events. She married Lamson Jennings in 1919. The collection consists of 5 photograph albums and 9 color stereo transparencies. Four albums contain portraits of family members and friends of the Walton-Jennings families. Those pictured include members of the Lamson, Calhoun, Clark, Sturdevant, Curtis, Judd, Kinney, North, and Hart families. Some identified photographs are missing from the albums. The fifth album contains prints and photographs of the travels of John Whittlesey Walton to England, Florida, Toronto, New England, and Europe. One of the photograph albums includes a built-in music box. 7 color stereo transparencies of the Briggs Mansion on Overlook Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, taken in 1964 are included, as are 2 color stereo transparencies of a statue of a bear at Wade Park, taken in 1958.

The collection consists of one photograph album and loose photographs of mostly architectural views, including several of Shandy Hall, Geneva, Ohio. The photograph album includes views of Frary's travels to the West, and many postcards.

 Abstract:  James H. McNally was a Chicago, Illinois, resident and son of James McNally, vice president of Rand, McNally & Company. He served with the 1st Illinois Field Artillery at San Antonio and Leon Springs, Texas, and with the Canadian Artillery in France and Belgium during World War I. The collection consists of photographs of camps and scenes near San Antonio and Leon Springs, Texas, with the 1st Illinois Field Artillery. Also includes photographs of views in France and Belgium with the Canadian Artillery; postcards of France, Germany, and Belgium; newspaper clippings; and discharge and repatriation papers and Canadian Army memorabilia.

 Abstract:  Frank E. Joseph (1928-2008) worked thirty-five years as an attorney for Hahn Loeser Freedheim Dean & Wellman in Cleveland, Ohio. He was president of Bellefaire JCB and also served on the boards of various Cleveland charities. Married to the former Maddy Sue Lawrence in 1959, the couple had two children. The Joseph family is a prominent Cleveland family, having arrived in the area in 1872. The collection consists of four bound volumes and three portraits depicting the family life of Frank E. Joseph, as well as the experiences of Joseph family members on trips throughout the Western Reserve and abroad.

185Title:  Park Synagogue Photographs, Series II

 Abstract:  Park Synagogue, one of the largest Conservative Jewish synagogues in the world, was founded in 1869 in Cleveland, Ohio, as Anshe Emeth Congregation by twelve Jewish immigrant families from Poland. In 1904, the congregation engaged its first English speaking rabbi, Samuel Margolies. Anshe Emeth merged with Congregation Beth Tefilo ca. 1916, and a large synagogue was built for the combined congregation on East 105th Street in 1922. That same year, Rabbi Solomon Goldman, a well known scholar, teacher, and activist, was hired. He led the congregation into the ranks of Conservative Judaism. In 1934, the congregation engaged one of its own confirmands, Armond E. Cohen, as rabbi. The synagogue, popularly called the Cleveland Jewish Center, became a focus of Jewish life in the Glenville area, serving the social, intellectual, and recreational needs, as well as the religious, of its members; one of the first synagogues in the United States combining all of these facilities in one structure. Following the eastward movement of Cleveland's Jewish population, property on Mayfield Road in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was purchased in 1942 from the private Park School. In 1950, Park Synagogue (as the congregation came to be known) dedicated a new building, designed by Eric Mendelsohn. In 1969, Kangesser Hall, a 2,000 seat auditorium, was dedicated. When B'rith Emeth Congregation ceased operations in 1988, their Pepper Pike, Ohio building was purchased by Park Synagogue, becoming their eastern educational facility. Some former members of B'rith Emeth affiliated with Park Synagogue. The collection consists of one hundred black and white and twenty color photographs from the Brith Emeth Congregation and Park Synagogue.

 Abstract:  Local 80 of the Operative Plasters and Cement Masons International Association of the United States and Canada was chartered in 1890 as a Cleveland, Ohio, Local of the Operative Plasterers (est. 1864). Local 80 was dropped in 1898 but rechartered in 1899. The cement masons were admitted to the union in 1914. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of union officials, members, and staff, and views of various union activities, including banquets, conferences, parties, work sites, and a trade school.

 Abstract:  Troop A was founded in 1877 as an independent military unit to defend against strikers and unruly mobs. It affiliated with the Ohio National Guard in 1877, formed part of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1898, was absorbed into the 135th Field Artillery in 1918, and reorganized in 1920 as Troop A of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard. It became part of the 107th Armored Cavalry Regiment in 1947. The Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery was also founded in 1877 to quell labor violence. It disbanded by 1905. The che collection consists of albums and loose photographs depicting the unit at outings, encampments, celebrations, and ceremonial services, including the inaugurations of Presidents William McKinley and William Howard Taft, and the funerals of President William McKinley, Senator Marcus A. Hanna, and U.S. Ambassador to France Myron T. Herrick. Locations depicted include Dover Bay, Ohio; Camps Perry, George Crook, McKinley, Beaumont, Nash, and other military camps in Ohio and other states; and in France during World War I. Also included are views of Troop A's Mexican border service in 1916. A large portion of the collection consists of numerous studio individual portraits of members of Troop A and the Cleveland Gatling Gun Battery.

Neumark retired as vice-president and chairman of the executive committee of the Printz-Biederman Company, 1953, and later, served as vice-president of Tremco Inc. He was active in numerous Jewish organizations, including The Temple-Tifereth Israel. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Leo W. Neumark and his family and friends, photographs of his 90th birthday party in 1980, and functions of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland and at the Temple-Tifereth Israel.

 Abstract:  Thomas Vail, son of attorney Herman L. Vail and Delia B. White, both members of prominent Cleveland families, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, June 23, 1926. Vail was educated at University School in Cleveland and Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts and graduated from Princeton University in 1948. He joined his family business, the Forest City Publishing Company, and later transferred to its morning paper, the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In 1963, Vail assumed duties as publisher and editor of the Plain Dealer. For over twenty five years, Vail oversaw the transition of the Plain Dealer from the city's runner up publication to the largest daily and Sunday newspaper in Ohio. Vail retired from the paper in 1992. Vail was also active in other interests such as the Cleveland Foundation, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and was the co-founder of Cleveland Tomorrow, an organization formed in 1982 to promote economic growth. He was also president of the Cleveland Convention and active in the Visitor's Bureau and the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. On a national level, he served on the boards of the Associated Press and the Newspaper Advertising Bureau. Consists of 130 black and white and five color images in various sizes and four 35 mm color negatives.

 Abstract:  The Jones Home of Children's Services was established in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1887 as a home for foster children and orphans and originally called the Jones Home for Friendless Children. It was donated by Carlos L. Jones who ran it with his wife. It has since come under the aegis of the United Way and presently houses emotionally disturbed children and children awaiting hearings in juvenile court. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of staff members and residents of the Jones Home. Views depict activities of the children from the home and of events held for the children. The majority of the photographs are from the 1940s and 1950s. Also included are photographs from the 1962 75th Anniversary of the Jones Home.

 Abstract:  Harry "Czar" Bernstein (1856-1920) was a Cleveland, Ohio, businessman and Republican Party political ward boss. He was born in Poland, and emigrated to Cleveland in 1868 with his parents. In addition to various businesses, he owned the Peoples and Perry theaters in Cleveland, which presented entertainment in Yiddish in the Eastern European Jewish neighborhood of Woodland. He became involved in Cleveland politics as a ward boss in the 16th (later the 12th) ward of Cleveland, a heavily immigrant neighborhood. He married Sarah Trilling in 1888. The collection consists of one album and loose photographs relating to Harry Bernstein, his family and friends.

 Abstract:  The Buell family was a pioneer family from Connecticut who helped settle Marietta, Ohio. Joseph Buell was a sergeant at Fort Harmar, across the Muskingum River from Marietta, when the first settling party from the Ohio Company arrived in April 1788. He later settled in Marietta with his family. Joseph Buell ran a successful tavern. In addition, he was appointed an associate justice of the Washington County Court of Common Pleas and a major general in the Ohio Militia in 1803, and served an an elected state senator from 1803-1805. Joseph's brother Timothy Buell was a captain in the militia and also served as a county magistrate, a state representative from 1820-1822, and sheriff of Washington County. Many of their descendants were also prominent in the affairs of Marietta and Washington County. The collection consists of portraits of members of the Buell, Curtis, and Nye families. Also includes photographs of Troop A of Cleveland, Ohio, miscellaneous interiors, views of Blennerhassett Island, postcards, and lithographic prints depicting various scenes, buildings, and people of the United States, Canada, and Europe.

 Abstract:  Reverend Wade H. McKinney (1892-1963) was pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio (1928-1962). He and his wife, Ruth Berry McKinney, were active in numerous church and civic organizations and in the affairs of Cleveland's black community. The collection consists of portraits of Reverend Wade Hampton McKinney and other family members. Also included are group portraits which include various Morehouse College groups; World War I African American soldiers; the Antioch Baptist Church Choir; and a view of groundbreaking ceremonies for the Cedar Branch of the Cleveland Y.M.C.A. Individuals in group portraits include O.M. Hoover, George H. Caslin, M. C. Southerland, A. A. Womack, J. C. Walker, H. G. Coleman, W. M. Bivens, W. R. Jones, William L. Engram, Reverend John T. Weeden, A. William Jameson, L. L. Stevenson, and R. C. Fuller, and Jackie Robinson.

 Abstract:  Frank Josehp Bardoun (1905-1988) was a prominent member of Cleveland, Ohio's Czech community who was a leader in many local and national Czech organizations, including the Czechoslovak Society of America and the Workers Gymnastic Union (DTJ). The collection consists of group portraits and views of LaSalle Club activities, primarily at Taborville, Ohio, and of the Worker's Gymnastic Union. Included are Taborville scenes, Vojan Singing Society photographs, athletic clubs, and photographs of the interior of Park Drop Forge in Cleveland, Ohio.

 Abstract:  John Cumming Johnson moved to Memphis, Tennessee, from Franklin, Ohio, in 1854. In 1856 he married Mary Anne Elizabeth Fisher. They were active in many philanthropic enterprises, especially education. Johnson and his son, William Cumming Johnson, were involved in the cotton trade. William Cumming Johnson was a major stockholder in the Tennessee Fiber Co. and had extensive real estate dealings in Florida. In 1877 he married Sarah Evangeline Harvey. She was the daughter of Charles T. Harvey, a New England structural engineer, and Sarah Van Eps Harvey. "Eva" Harvey married William Cumming Johnson in 1897 and settled in Tennessee, where she was a homemaker and mother. The Johnsons had four sons, Harvey B., Richard Selden, William C. Jr. and Burton Hayley. Lilian Wycoff Johnson, the sister of William Cumming Johnson, was one of the South's pioneer women educators. She served as president of the Western College for Women at Oxford, Ohio, founded the West Tennessee Normal School (now Memphis State College), and established a center for social and cooperative work on the Cumberland Plateau at Summerfield, Tennessee which was called KinCo. It later became the Highlander Folk School. The collection consists of portraits and views of the Johnson family of Memphis, Tennessee, including William Cumming Johnson, his wife Sarah Evangeline Harvey Johnson, his sister Lilian Wycoff Johnson, their family, friends, residences, and travels. Also included in this collection are views of KinCo Farm and Highlander School near Monteagle, Tennessee, founded by Lilian Wycoff Johnson.

 Abstract:  Albert M. Brown (1901-1994) was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants. Brown became involved in social work in the Cleveland Jewish community, working at the Kinsman branch of the Council Educational Alliance from 1923-1929. After working at a New York City settlement house from 1930-1938, he returned to Cleveland and worked at the National Youth Administration and Bellefaire. In 1942, he became director of the Toledo Jewish Community Center. After returning to Cleveland in 1955, he served as executive director of the Community Temple (Beth Am) until 1963, when he was appointed the founding director of Council Gardens in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, a senior adult housing community. During his retirement, he worked part-time as the social director of his own residence, the Concord Apartments in Cleveland Heights. Brown wrote and produced many one-act plays. He was also authored The Camp Wise Story: 1907-1988, published in 1989. The collection consists of individual portraits of Albert M. Brown, group portraits depicting his associates and activities at Camp Wise and the Jewish Community Center, views of Camp Wise, and a view of B. J. Brown Hardware, his father's business. The slides depict Council Gardens in the 1960s and 1970s when Brown served as director there.

 Abstract:  Euclid Avenue Congregational church was founded in 1843, in Cleveland, Ohio. Until 1853 it had a Presbyterian form of government and was called the Presbyterian Church of East Cleveland. A Hough Avenue branch of the church existed from 1890 until 1934, under the name Hough Avenue Congregational Church. In 1934 it merged with the Euclid Avenue church. The Euclid Avenue Congregational Church was destroyed by fire on March 23, 2010. The collection consists of four photograph albums and loose photographs, including individual portraits of members and ministers of the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church. Three of the albums contain photographs and biographical and service information on members of the congregation serving in the armed forces during World War II. Also included are interior and exterior views of this church, and of the Hough Avenue Congregational Church.
