3Title:  Wallace Hugh Cathcart Papers
 Creator:  Cathcart, Wallace Hugh
 Dates:  1910-1921
Abstract:  Wallace Hugh Cathcart (1865-1942) was a prominent Cleveland, Ohio, bibliophile associated with the Western Reserve Historical Society as president (1907-1913) and director (1913-1942), acquiring many of that organization's finest manuscript collections. Cathcart was also vice-president and general manager of Burrows Bros., a prosperous Cleveland book dealer, and was one of the founders, and later vice-president, of the American Booksellers & Publishers Association. Cathcart was a member of the executive committee of the Cuyahoga County Centennial Celebration, chaired by William H. Hunt and held in 1910. The week-long centennial included various dedications, street pageants, a water carnival and an aeroplane meet. During the celebration, the $3 million Cuyahoga County Courthouse and a new post office were dedicated. The Historical Commission of Ohio was created in 1918 to collect and preserve materials pertaining to Ohio's role in World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, official programs and badges and related publicity material concerning the Cuyahoga County Centennial celebration of 1910, including typescript copies of speeches given at dedicatory events and poems submitted about the county. Also included are reports and correspondence by William Farrand Felch, executive secretary of the Historical Commission of Ohio (1919-1921), concerning the demise of the Commission's collection, 1920-1921. The collection also contains newspaper clippings and miscellaneous research notes and memoranda compiled by Cathcart pertaining to various explorers and explorations of North America.
