124Title:  Darius Lyman Family Papers

 Abstract:  Darius Lyman (1789-1867) was a lawyer who came to Ravenna, Ohio, from Connecticut in 1814. He became a state senator and a Portage County judge. His son, Darius Jr., was Chief of the Navigation Division of the United States Treasury Department. His grandson, Henry D. Lyman, was Second Assistant Postmaster General of the United States. John P. Converse was the father-in-law of Darius Lyman, Jr. He came to Parkman, Ohio from Vermont in 1816 and operated several mills with his wife's brother, Robert B. Parkman. Parkman came to Ohio from New York in 1801. He settled Parkman, Ohio and served as its postmaster. He was also a Geauga County Prosecutor (1806-1817) and Probate Judge (1819). The collection consists of correspondence, letter copies, legal documents, estate documents, indentures, land surveys, accounts, receipts, promissory notes, literary works, and personal journals of Robert B. Parkman, John P. Converse, Darius Lyman, Darius Lyman Jr., and Henry Lyman.

 Abstract:  The families of Thomas White and Andrew Ford resided in Massachusetts in the mid-1600s. Their descendants migrated to Cleveland, Ohio, where Ella White (1883-1952) married Horatio Ford (1881-1952) in 1908. The collection consists primarily of genealogical data on the Horatio Ford family and the Thomas White family. Includes diaries, newspaper clippings, correspondence, certificates, receipts, forms, and miscellaneous writings by Horatio C. Ford. The diaries (1845-1848) contain references to temperance, abolitionists, the Mexican-American War, and the Liberty Party.

 Abstract:  Caleb Emerson was a Marietta, Ohio lawyer, journalist and abolitionist, and co-founder of the Marietta Branch of the Washington Benevolent Society. He married Mary Dana, the daughter of an early settler of Washington County. Their son, George Dana, was a captain in the 1st Michigan Engineers during the Civil War. Their son-in-law, William D. Bailey was Treasurer of Warren Township, Ohio. The collection consists of personal and business correspondence; legal papers, financial papers (receipts and accounts); historical, political, and biographical sketches; public letters and addresses; notes and articles on slavery, abolition, religion, and temperance; minutes and journals of the Washington Benevolent Society; civic records of Warren Township; and original poetry.
