History of Miss Mittleberger's School

Miss Mittleberger's School was founded in 1877 by Augusta Mittleberger in Cleveland, Ohio. It quickly became one of the most prominent schools for girls and women in Cleveland, serving day and boarding students from prominent families in Cleveland, other regions in Ohio, and nearby states. The school's first classes were held in Mittleberger's home, and in 1881 the school moved to 1020 Prospect Avenue in a home provided by John D. Rockefeller. Although nonsectarian, the school provided a strong Protestant moral environment that stressed the development of intellect and character. Classes were offered from kindergarten to college, and most students went on to attend college elsewhere. The school closed in 1908 when Miss Mittleberger retired.
