Abstract: Linda Thayer Guilford (1823-1911) was an educator and temperance advocate of Cleveland, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, speeches, notes on early Cleveland, Ohio, schools; newspaper clippings, scrapbook, and other papers concerning Miss Guilford's activities as a teacher at the Cleveland Female Seminary and the Cleveland Academy, and her interest in the temperance movement. Includes secretary's book (1882-1885) of the Young Ladies Temperance League and minutes and newspaper clippings (1885-1880) concerning the Young Ladies League for Temperance Education, Cleveland. Also contains notes in memory of her former student, Constance Fenimore Woolson, and extracts from the writings of Woolson.

Biography of Linda Thayer Guilford

Linda Thayer Guilford (1823-1911) was born in Lanesboro, Massachusetts and worked in the paper mills there until friends enabled her to attend Mt. Holyoke Seminary. After graduating in 1847, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, first to to become principal of the Young Ladies Seminary and then to be principal of the Female Academy. From 1854-1860 she was principal of the Cleveland Female Seminary, and from 1861-1866 she owned and operated her own private school for boys and girls. From 1866-1881 she was principal of the Cleveland Academy. Guilford was active in the temperance movement, serving as president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and as an active member of the Young Women's Temperance League.
