Abstract: Joshua Stow was an original shareholder in the Connecticut Land Company and commissary on the Moses Cleaveland surveying party in the Western Reserve. The ollection consists of a summary of expenses for surveys in the Western Reserve for the Connecticut Land Company; letters from Jared Mansfield, Samuel Storrs, Joseph Beebe, Oliver Beebe, Leonard Case, Noah Newton, and from Henry Champion, a director of the Connecticut Land Company, concerning the southwest boundary of the Western Reserve; and papers concerning the survey of the Firelands by Maxfield Ludlow.

Scope and Content

The Joshua Stow Papers, 1795-1832, consist of a summary of expenses for surveys in the Western Reserve for the Connecticut Land Company; letters from Jared Mansfield, Samuel Storrs, Joseph Beebe, Oliver Beebe, Leonard Case, Noah Newton, and from Henry Champion, a director of the Connecticut Land Company, concerning the southwest boundary of the Western Reserve; and papers concerning the survey of the Firelands by Maxfield Ludlow.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the early history of the Western Reserve, the role of the Connecticut Land Company in the early surveys, boundaries, and development of Cleveland and northeast Ohio, and the financial aspects of land surveys in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
