Abstract: Elizur Wright, Jr. (1804-1885) was an abolitionist, and professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Western Reserve College (Hudson, Ohio). Wright took part in the anti-slavery movement before the Civil War. His father came from Canaan, Connecticut, to Tallmadge, Ohio, in 1810, where he founded the Tallmadge Academy. The collection consists of letters to Wright, chiefly from his father, Elizur Wright, of Tallmadge, Ohio, together with some from his mother, Rhoda (Hanmer), and from his brother and sister, James and Clarissa, relating to life in Tallmadge, Western Reserve College, and the anti-slavery movement.

Scope and Content

The Elizur Wright Letters, 1822-1843, consist of letters to Wright, chiefly from his father, Elizur Wright, of Tallmadge, Ohio, together with some from his mother, Rhoda (Hanmer), and from his brother and sister, James and Clarissa, relating to life in Tallmadge, Western Reserve College, and the anti-slavery movement. This collection consists of transcripts (typewritten) made by Frederick C. Waite in 1940 from originals owned by Mrs. Samuel B. Tay of Maynard, Massachusetts.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Tallmadge, Ohio, Western Reserve College, and the anti-slavery movement in the Western Reserve and the United States during the first half of the nineteenth century. The letters in this collection are primarily from Elizur Wright, Jr.'s father, although there are some from his mother (Clarissa), sister (Clarissa), and brother (James).
