Abstract: Matthew Scott Cook (1803-1882) was a surveyor, farmer, businessman and Ohio State legislator, of Chillicothe, Ohio. The collection consists of correspondence, land agreements and deeds, survey and field notes, financial receipts, legal briefs, travel journals, memoranda and account books relating to Cook's farm; meteorological data; and American Civil War correspondence. Includes 17 diaries of Amos Wheeler, Jr.

Scope and Content

The Matthew Scott Cook Papers, 1807-1887 and undated, consist of correspondence, land agreements and deeds, survey and field notes, financial receipts, legal briefs, travel journals, memoranda and account books relating to Cook's farm; meteorological data; and Civil War correspondence. Includes 17 diaries of Amos Wheeler, Jr.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of Chillicothe, Ohio, and the business and family interests of Matthew Scott Cook and the Cook family. Those studying the history of Ohio politics, the history of business and entrepreneurship in the nineteenth century, and the American Civil War will find this collection useful. Cook was the uncle of United States President Rutherford B. Hayes, and had business interestes in Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. The collection includes a journal kept while working, sometimes as a flatboatman, on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, and on other waterways in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio from 1815-1817; memoranda and account books relating to Cook's Paint Creek Farm, 1830-1844; journal kept on a trip to Quebec, Saratoga, and Boston, 1852; several volumes containing meteorological data, 1860-1884; letters from several nephews who served in the Civil War from his son, Edward T. Cook, Company D. 89th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 1861-1865; and two letter books, 1873-1881. Correspondents include John R. Bailey, C. G. W. Comegys, Samuel Galloway (1811-1872), Rutherford B. Hayes (1882-1893), Isaac Moore, Joseph T. Reynolds, Isaac C. Riggin, and John L. Taylor (1805-1870).
