Scope and Content

The Regimental Papers of the Civil War, 1846-1908 (1861-1865) is a large collection of regimental papers from regiments that served in the American Civil War. The collection was acquired from a number of sources by William Pendleton Palmer, President of the Western Reserve Historical Society from 1913-1927. It is part of the manuscript material in his Civil War collection which is now an important part of the holdings of the Western Reserve Historical Society. It includes Union and Confederate regiments of thirty states, with half of the containers and volumes pertaining to Ohio volunteers. The collection includes military and personal correspondence, official orders, muster rolls, ordnance and quartermaster reports, lists of casualties, memoirs, diaries, descriptions of the engagements in which the regiments took part, and material dealing with veterans' organizations after the war. There are also papers of Negro regiments enlisted in the Southern States occupied by Union armies. Except for the veterans' organizations and a few references to the Mexican War and the 1850s, all of the material refers to the Civil War years 1861-1865. Also included in this collection is the James E. Taylor Sketchbook, which is described in detail in a separate finding aid.

This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of the American Civil War, the activities of Union and Confederate regiments during that war, the experiences of individual soldiers, and the post-war activities of veterans' groups.
