Jacob Dolson Cox was a Union Army general and politician from Ohio. During the American Civil War, Cox headed the Department
of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of
the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-1867) and was President Grant's Secretary of the
Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military
Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900). The collection consists of a bound, ribbon copy of William Cox Cochran's(1846-1936)
unfinished biography of his stepfather, Major General Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900). This unpublished manuscript was prepared
after William Cox Cochran's death in 1936.
