History of the Virginia Military District in Ohio

The papers in this collection include seven entry books, an estimated 4,400 to 4,800 surveys, and one index to entries, all referring to land in the Virginia Military District lying between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers in Ohio. the District and other land in Kentucky was granted to Virginia by Congress in 1784 to settle its claims to the Northwest Territory and reward its veterans of the Revolution. Along with a related collection in the Illinois Historical Survey of the University of Illinois at Urbana, these volumes and papers form the surviving records of the surveys made under the direction of Colonel Richard C. Anderson, Surveyor from 1787 to his death in 1826, his son-in-law, Allan Latham, and his son, William Marshall Anderson, with the latest date 1839. The office was located in Louisville, Kentucky, until Latham moved it to Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1829.

Scope and Content

The Virginia Military District in Ohio Papers, 1787-1839, consist of seven entry books, ca. 4400 to 4800 surveys, and an index to entries, referring to land in the Virginia Military District lying between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers in Ohio, which was surveyed under the direction of Anderson, his son-in-law, Allen Latham, and his son, William Marshall Anderson. Includes personal papers of Dr. R.G. Lewis and miscellaneous papers of Allen Latham.

The surveys and entries of surveys are part of a mass of papers dealing with the involved process of disposing of the land in the Virginia Military District. The first five papers consist of documents known as a certificate and were issued to a Virginia veteran by his commanding officer. Certificates specified the veteran's rank and term of service. At the request of the veteran, the Virginia Land Office issued a warrant for the number of acres due him and the certificates were kept by the Office. The warrant could be willed or sold and many were apparently lost or never used, for there are hundreds of gaps in all the surviving records. The entry was also known as a "location," and to get it the holder of a warrant took it to the Surveyor's office in Louisville or Chillicothe and was assigned to a Deputy Surveyor. The warrant holder then picked out his land, the best available upon the advice of the Deputy and at first along the rivers and creeks, and later the less desirable land. The resulting confusion in shapes and sizes has been a problem ever since. Then followed the survey, and those in the present collection are unique in that they are signed by the Deputy Surveyor and contain the names of the two chain carriers and the marker. Some are countersigned by the Andersons or Latham. These are the original surveys, the others in the various archives are copies. The warrant number and the survey number are not always the same, although the majority of them are. The final paper was the patent, which the owner received after the Deputy Surveyor turned over to the Surveyor the warrant, entry, and survey.
