Abstract: | Peter Turner (d. 1871) was a Midshipman on board the U. S. S. Nonsuch, commanded by his uncle, Daniel Turner, during an expedition under Colonel Oliver H. Perry, which sought to end piracy on the waters near Venezuela, May 20, 1823-September 7, 1824. He also served on board the U. S. S. Cyane off the coast of Brazil, December 27, 1825-June 4, 1827. Peter Turner eventually became a naval officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and commanding various naval vessels. The collection consists of a letter book (1850-1861, 1870-1872) as commander of various ships, correspondence (1861-1873) relating to naval matters, logbook (1823-1824) kept by Turner on the U.S.S. Nonsuch, and a logbook (1825-1827) kept on the U.S.S. Cyane. |

The Peter Turner Papers, 1823-1873, consist of a letter book (1850-61, 1870-72) as commander of various ships, correspondence (1861-1873) relating to naval matters, logbook (1823-1824) kept by Turner on the U.S.S. Nonsuch, and a logbook (1825-1827) kept on the U.S.S. Cyane.
